Hello ramdaskalam

To send a message over a telephone connection is easy, because there are several methods:

  1. Telephone and speak to the other person
  2. Telephone and leave a voice message in Voicemail
  3. Telephone and leave a message on Answerphone
  4. Send a written message by Fax
  5. Use Internet, and a Browser on a weblinked page
  6. Use Internet, send email
  7. Use Internet, and Computer with Windows Messenger
  8. Use Internet, and Computer with MSN Messenger
  9. Use Internet, and Computer with IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
  10. Other Internet chat facilities

There are more ways to send a message, but those above are some, and others may add further means of messaging through a telephone connection, in a Post below.

Kind Regards....

All you need for data communication over the telephone system, or any twisted pair of wires. Is a computer with a modem attached at each end and some software to control and display the results...

In the 80s we used to have bulliton boards, these were basically computers at a location that would answer a call with a modem and you could rummage around in the computer to find the information you needed to download it or leave a message for someone to answer you...

Those old style modems were just a microphone and a loudspeaker which you placed the telephone handset on - very slow, I think the maximum speed was about 1200 Baud, maybe 2400?

John.

<blows dust off old reference book>

Is remote duplex teletype with frequency-shift tones still practised?

What about Telex?

Many years ago, student broadcasting used dedicated pairs of telephone lines to connect between studio(s) and transmitter(s). That system would send a message.

<closes book. Gets out vaccum cleaner...>

Well, well, well, you guys are really deliciously naughty.

And the firm answer is : YES. BUT.......

I do not care who operates a phone network. There are only two basic types: with analog handsets and those with digital handsets.

You can connect modem, fax etc. with no difficulty to a line serving an analog handset, and not be concerned if/when the information goes digital.

Generally, you cannot connect to a line serving a digital handset. Your local PBX (your in-house exchange) normally have ports to serve you. You just have to arrange a line from there to your location. I had to do the same.

As far as services concerns, you get what your local PBX provides. Period.

Hi ramdaskalam,

You should have at least responded once to the replies provided by so many people.

What actually do you want to know weather SMS can be sent through land line phone of BSNL. If that is what you want to know then answer is No,because the telephone instruments are analogue type. But you can send SMS through BSNL cell phones.

If you say messages, it can be voice transmission and data transmission. BSNL land line telephones can be used for both voice and data transmission. For data transmission you need a fax machine or a modem and computer. BSNL phones are meant for voice communication with telephone instrument or transmit data with a standard fax machine or you can connect a computer with modem for internet connectivity. Facility for dial up and broad band internet facility is also available with BSNL telephone lines.
