The Ultimate Skyscraper

05/31/2006 9:10 AM

A team of Japanese engineers are designing a city of ultra-high skyscrapers that promise to alleviate Japan's overcrowding problem. This "Hyper City" will have not only the tallest skyscrapers ever built, but ever imagined. They will house thousands of families while also providing a place for them to work and play.

The superstructures will be built utilizing a special "crystalline concrete" and will boast lush gardens as well as wind-deflecting engineering and a "countering-sway" system. Take a look at their vision.

Arcologies

05/31/2006 9:33 AM

Those remind me a lot of the arcologies that they had in SimCity or even BladeRunner. I'm still not certain if these megabuildings are a good idea or not. While they make for a safe secure life. Taking an elevator to work sounds like a great commute; but I'm not so sure about the insular mindset that it might produce.
And lets face it; it is the ultimate putting all your eggs in one basket.

Does it make sense to build very tall buildings in a country subject to massive earthquakes?

That was my thought too. Also it looks like it can be built in the water. Or at least it LOOKS like an oil platform.

Pack 'em close together & they can prop each other up if (when?) they fall over ;-)

Like dominoes in a row? Have an architectural contest to see who can create the best pattern when they fall?
