Small Galvanizing Plant

03/13/2008 6:03 AM

I would like to set up a small galvanizing plant. This plant must be able to galvinize up to 3 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width.

Could anyone advise me on

1)How galvinizing works

2)What I would need

3) Enviromental options

4)What the cost would be

I would apperciate comments and advice

Regards

1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanising

2) A bath big enough to dunk whatever it is you're galvanising into it. Kris had one (luverly - all cast iron it was) but I think 'e got carried away with a a big 'ammer a few weeks back. Shame, really, 'cos there was a bloke in Aveley wanted one.

3) Zinc fumes are poisonous.

4) Well, it's funny you should ask because I've just been offered <snip>

I believe that you are looking for a sheet galvanizing plant. The sheet size you mentioned is quite large (3mx1.5m). The old technology of sheet to sheet galvanizing is no more in use being expensive and low productivity. Now a days continuous galvanizing lines are used. Though they are expensive but quite productive. Two processes are common: wet and dry. The line for dry process is much more expensive than the wet one. The quality on dry is much more superior to the wet one. You need to approach existing manufacturers in Africa to cooperate with you. I can provide links if you so desire.

Are you talking about HOT DIP galvanising or ELECTRO galvanising>

For hot dip galvanising you need a bath of molten zinc.

For electro galvanising you need a transformer and rectifier, and an electroplating bath with the necessary zinc electrodes.

In most cases you would need to clean the material beforehand which requires a degreasing bath as well as a derusting bath and a passivating bath.

After electro-galvanising the material need to be passivated once more.

Your handling equipment, ie an overhead crane, is also important.

For the calculation of the plant sizes you need the capacity of ton and square meters throughput.

Hi Johan

Thank you for the reply I have a engineering company where I could build the tanks which is not a a problem,my issue is hot dip galvinizing or electro galvinizing and to install the electrics that are rquired for this process and which would be the better process to take. The other concern is enviromental problems how to overcome them.

The purpose for my enquiries in this direction is due to the overload at the galvinizing places.

I am interested in the small guy security gates etc,Burglar bars where I would not need an overhead crane.

The biggest problem is my electrical backround is zero

"I have a engineering company"

"The purpose for my enquiries in this direction is due to the overload at the galvinizing places."

If I understand correctly:

Your current added value process is manufacturing rather large sheet metal parts from plain carbon steel and up to now you used to subcontract the galvanising.

Since you need to galvanise large pcs, and because I can assure you that you are going to have major quality problems with whatever process you adopt, being a rookie on the process, I suggest you approcah your problem differently:

Switch material. galvanised sheet or aluzinc instead of plain carbon+galvanising

Total cost is probably less, considering that you get rid of the hassle of adopting a major new process (and even of subcontractors' defects; galvanising and chromate passivation are very tricky...)

Zinc-epoxy painting would be a simpler process to adapt for small scale work with fewer environmental issues.

Ever thought about 'metal spraying with Zinc? You can purchse the whole set up with an air compressor, metal spray gun, a sandblasting chamber with an exhaust and a dust collector for about 10-15 k and give a zinc coating on anything ever a whole ship if need be. This is a very versatile process and can be adapted to spray any metal if need be.

One can learn the process in a couple of hours and be an expert!!!

Contact me if you are interested and I can set everything up wherever in the World you are

Let me put something together in a couple of days and I will send you the information and if you can let me have your mailing address, I will send you some sprayed sample for evaluation and a complete list of equipment with costs for the project and if you can travel to the US, I would be able to train you or any of your people to use the equipment free of cost if you purchase the equipment from us.. you can send me a direct e mail at vshwn7@aol.com with your address

Getting approval from the EPA -- good luck!

You heat the materail and spray it on what ever you want coated. A hot dip works too just decide what you going to be coating.

For metal spraying, you do not have to heat the part you are spraying on, only need to sand blast to near white and spray, the part remeins relatively cold and particularly when you are spraying with Zinc which is a low melting point material, and the coating thickness is low, never more than about 0.006 inches thick, the part never get hot at all and as compared with dip galvanizing, which is about 0.0015 inch thick at the most you can spray more zinc like 0.006 inches thick to increase the protection for a much longer time

Here is a good web site for information on spray type galvanizing systems, especially for a small fab shop. I'm assuming you are considering sheet steel and perhaps fabricated pieces?

Haven't been to South Africa since 1978.

Hi

Read your post regarding "Setting up an Galvanizing Plant".

Any tips regarding where to start, set-up costs and where you source the material here in South Africa?

Any comments would be appreciated.
