IMPORTANT - VIRUS ALERT

04/19/2008 10:42 AM

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with
An attachment entitled 'You have received a POSTCARD from a family member,'
Regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD
IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will
be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact
List. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your

contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the
Virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a

friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by

Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by
McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This
Virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital

Information is kept.

ducon i hope that you are enjoying printing this hoax on here. If you are uninformed that it is a hoax? Then a little research on your part would be nice. With some reference to substantiate the claim.

www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.Asp

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_postcard_virus.htm

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/postcard-virus-hoax.shtml

http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/a/a-card-for-you.htm

There is a virus attached to it. The hoax is the amount of damage it is listed at low risk. Been around for awhile.

Thank you ozzb,

Whatever is it a true or hoax, my policy is not to open any message from unknown e-mail.

The question now: Is there any risk from opening any CR4 threads? Or are CR4 threads protected against hackers? (Is that innocent question?)

rant on about virus posters...

Yep, I rate the people who post virus alerts as... oops, I'm note signed on as anonymous...so can't say that.

But will say: whoever gets one of "those" viruses just about everytime DESERVE it. If they are so stupid they think they can just go around on the Internet without virus protection, and sorta keeping up on what is going on, then they need to have something like that get their attention. Real doubtful it will though. They are just too stupid to figure it out.

I didn't think we had people so stupid they would post a virus alert on CR4, but guess we do.

ozzb gave a good answer.

The FIRST thing to do with ANYTHING you want to know is USE a major search engine to SEE what info is available for it ALREADY.

It has circulated continuously on the Internet since at least 2001.

That is SEVEN YEARS...

And people post: HEY, BE CAREFUL, A NEW VIRUS.

I HATE stupid people who do that, because IF they were smart, they would have msn/yahoo/google/dogpile/ask it and learned that it has been around for SEVEN YEARS and thought, whoa, I don't want to look stupid, I'm NOT going to post anything about that!

The ONLY person who can make YOU look stupid, ... is YOU. Posting BS virus warnings ANYWHERE makes a person look stupid.

I HAVE received a few viruses over the years (25 years of PC's)... and every time they came from some idiot, stupid "friend" of mine who was so stupid they weren't running a virus program and firewall. That is the FIRST thing to get running BEFORE ever hooking to the Internet... that way you don't look stupid.

rant off

I like to hear about virus threats whether they are new or old.

The only person in this thread that looks stupid is you. If you know so much about everything than why bother ranting in threads when you can give people helpfull advise.

The thing that I cant stand is people who belittle other people.

Thank you for "calling out" the hypercritical anonymous poster. I have added a "good answer" rating to your post. I find it especially disturbing that the insulting post came a half hour after the apologetic one from the original poster.

I just wanted to comment that this post is very insulting and hypercritical, and it has no place in this dignified forum (or anywhere for that matter). There is no justification for calling anyone "stupid" - this is something that I have tried to teach my children from the time they could speak. Sometimes it slips out in casual conversation, but to compose it in writing and then post it on a public forum is deplorable behaviour. It is especially disturbing that it was posted after the original poster admitted and apologized for the mistake. I also find it interesting that the rant was posted anonymously - perhaps the "ranter" knows that the post was unacceptable and didn't want to accept the consequences of being identified??

perhaps the "ranter" knows that the post was unacceptable and didn't want to accept the consequences of being identified?? Yes I believe so because all of us are known to each other in this CR4. Anyway thanks for your support.

WOW, that poster doesn't like virus alert posters! Can't say as I do either. No reason for it with all the search engines available to check that stuff out. I agree with a lot of it. People need to do some research before posting most stuff on any forum... the answer is usually there to be found.

Good answer ozzb.

Ducon meant well, and I would suspect we have all passed on this sort of thing until we were introduced to snopes.com or other urban legend sites. No harm was done and he will know to check first next time.

No worries Ducon.

I am sure he meant well and as you say there as no harm done.

After 44 years dealing with computers and 24 years using PCs (16 on the internet), I finally had my first viral infection about 1 month ago. [A Trojan virus]. What a mess it made. Got it on an email from a friend who must not run viral scanning software. Being a trusting soul, I assumed my virus software and the software that normally scans my email would pick it up but it didnt. My grandson (15 yr old) was able to recover the machine, but it took him ~24 hrs of work. His comment to me: "I can believe it. You broke the 1st rule of being on the internet. Dont download anything."

But then, you really can only do just so much to protect yourself against the idiot hackers, otherwise you limit your own capabilities and usefulness.
