Electron Man

On a 480/90 amp contactor and a 240 volts coil. I have a open coil, could I bump start the contactor by pushing in the contactor to see if the compressor will start.

Hello vcummings

If you value your eyesight, facial skin, hair and possibly your life, do not attempt manually pushing the contactor.

It is not possible to reliably close the contactor contacts, and hold them in position by hand, since the electrical operation normally takes only a few thousandths of a second.

Secondly, there is normally a chain of safety or control switches in the circuit to the contactor coil, and one of those safety or control switches may presently be operated, and your manual operation attempt would bypass all safety devices.

You are risking a lovely explosion and subsequent fireball rated at more than 480 Volts 3 Phase 90 Amps, = 129,000+ Watts, and much more on short circuit, perhaps 500kW fault surge, if you attempt manual operation.

A large fault surge may destroy the contactor, switchboard, and your good self, in less than a second.

Safely test all circuitry, coils and the like, remove from supply before manual operation of that contactor, to see if there is some physical reason for the non-operation.

Remember that some contactors are mechanically and electrically interlocked with others, at various stages of normal operation.

Hope you read this, before you attempt the manual operation of that contactor, and are not presently needing a wooden overcoat.

Kind Regards....
