Hydrogen Peroxide from Solar PV Route

04/25/2008 8:28 AM

What are the possibilities of generating small quantities of hydrogen peroxide being made by solar PV devices, for meeting on line needs for disinfecting water born pathogens?

It is not easy to make H2O2. Much easier to make ozone or use UV lamp.

Low voltage electrolysis path should be easier with Solar PV than with Ozone generation. I have no knowledge about relative merits of ozone or hydrogen peroxide paths. What ever is easy to maintain operate will be fine.

It's possible, but not straight forward. Why not generate sodium hypochlorite (bleach) from saltwater?

Just out of curiousity, Tad, how might one go about doing this? It sounds interesting.

When you electrolyze a sodium chloride (salt) solution, chlorine is produced at the anode, and sodium hydroxide is produced at the cathode. If there is no separation of the two electrodes, the chlorine reacts with the sodium hydroxide to form sodium hypochlorite (bleach). The solution should be kept cool to avoid forming sodium chlorate.

It's as simple as using a battery (or any DC source) with 2 non-corrosive electrodes, and a salt solution.

By electrolysis. Wallace & Tiernan (usual disclaimer) make equipment that does this.

Hi,

you really need nascent (atomic) oxygen, hydrogen-peroxide is split by many processes into water and one atom of oxygen. This atomic oxygen is much more reactive than the bi-atomic stable oxygen that is found in our atmosphere.

As solar cells produce low voltage you can easily produce some hydrogen and oxygen (in separate chambers) by electrolysis. The oxygen can be used for disinfection the hydrogen can be burnt.

Electrolysis can be done in a solution of sodium- or potassium-hydroxide.

Look for the companies that produce ozone generators to get the data which concentration of oxygen is needed for how long to kill the worst possible pathogens.

(One is Prominent in Germany).
