I Need a Combined Generator and Inverter

04/28/2008 8:51 PM

I need a 6-8kW standby backup power, combined set of "generator and inverter" 230VAC - 24VDC for a 15m plastic fishing boat so this has to be robust and compact. Mastervolt is producing what I need see http://mastervolt-solar.com/whispergenset/index.asp but there must be someone out there competing with them with quality and price. This has to be water (or sea) cooled unit with auto start and auto stop.

What I say may not be appreciated as intended, but most of the small generators I have ever seen had an AC (Mains) and a DC output, sometimes 12 volt, sometimes 24....for battery charging as well.

Often, only one output could be used at one time, which might not be to your liking.....

Most of them were air cooled, so lighter that a water cooled version and slightly less complicated as well......I would see that as a bonus on a small ship - less work to install/ repair. Provided that sufficient cool air can be supplied even under adverse conditions....

You did not mention the fuel requirements, but I would plump for Diesel as most probably the fishing boat also uses diesel and is way less explosive than petrol...... sadly my interests were all petrol driven 2 strokes and 4 strokes.......Diesel is more likely to need to be water cooled I feel, but I could be wrong........

If petrol is carried on board anyway for outboard motors, then perhaps this post has some merits.....

....it was just a thought anyway....

I have marked myself as being off topic (5 points!)

Honda makes a "super quiet" 6500 W generator, but it's not water-cooled like the one by Mastervolt.

Why dont you buy an aux genset that produces what you want. They are available in multi fuel configurations also just about all the electrical settings you can imagine. If you have an unusual electrical need jerk the end bell off and rearrange some connections. Now its fishin time.
