can u explain?Yes DC motors were used for speed control.Now with inverters ac motors can be used successfully in many applications involving speed control.Can answer u better if more details are given

Are we talking 1watt, 10 watts, 100 watts, 1Kwatt ?

Pulse width modulation is commonly used..

Or for low wattage stuff, a simple variable voltage or variable resistance may do the job.

These work quite well. They are pulse-width modulation with constant-speed feedback.
