We All Grow Older, But Must We Grow Forgetful, Too?

05/05/2008 3:52 AM

This article tells us to exercise our brain or we .....urmm.....DOH! I forgot what I wanted to say.

It is clear to all of us that old age makes you more forgetful, and amongst other things such as crankiness and harsh to the youths, you nod off more during the day.

Can what we do here on this forum be counted as brain exercise or are we not doing the right thing in order to comply with their requirements.

We are busy thinking and recalling long lost rusty theories or formulas but is that what they mean?

I don't want to buy a gadget such as a wi or a psp or xbox. I have resisted that till now and it has become a principle. I also don't want to look a geek

I don't have time to do crosswords and I also don't like them. I don't get time to read much these days as I am too busy doing other stuff. Does all this mean I am not at risk of becoming forgetful in my old age.....later

Re: We all grow older and forgetful, or do we?

It's not the old age to let people forget things...I think it's the stressful life!

I am 32 and I already forget a lot!

I love doing quizzes, crosswords, suduko etc... I really do think it helps the old brain.

I also reckon that, for me, this CR4 forum is a very good exercise for the grey matter...

Mainly because so many different topics are discussed and so many of these topics I'm not well versed on, so I'm learning loads every-time I come on here and read other's posts... Or when I post and someone more knowledgeable comes along and corrects me - very useful!!

John.

I am sure it helps but I believe their are limits. As the outside ages so do the insides. For example my father one of the smartest persons I know. At 84 his mine is not what it once was even though he spends most of his day active. Walks 5 miles and spends hour studying the stock market.

ozzb: I would be interested in knowing more of the mechanics of old age. Do you think there will be a time when we will be able to slow down or stop the deterioration in brain function? I suppose in one way we already are extending our brain-life by extending our organic life. The average life-span has increased dramatically over the past centuries and I wonder if it has a finite limit?

I think there is a simple factor that explains a lot of the nodding off and forgetfulness factor in an otherwise healthy older brain -- it's simple boredom. Even if you've been working in a quantitative job such as engineering, above a certain age you've probably been shuffled into a managerial role, not very demanding intellectually, "wiping noses and signing time cards," etc., but you need to keep that paycheck. After 35 or 40 years, the new projects start to look like all the other dozens of projects you've worked on. The technology may be new, new buzz words may have been invented for old ideas, but the human foibles and failures stay constant. For the young engineer, everything is still new and exciting and different, and their mistakes and misjudgments are being made for the first time. Young intelligence sees the new and different even in small details; old intelligence is crystallized and detects patterns of similarity. Both are needed.

Many comments rolled into one response here.

MadSciGuy, welcome aboard, I voted you a GA for your post.

Bruce, THANKS! The e-card from your niece was brilliant.

Scapolie/Spencer, welcome back, Mate, hadn't heard from you in awhile, and was a bit concerned for your well-being.

Case, I can't say for sure yet if keeping one's mind exercised helps in old age, but if I ever do get old, I'll let you know. I do crosswords and sudoku when I have the time, and I have mental hobbies to try to keep things new and interesting up there. I do know this, if you DON'T use your brain, when it deteriorates, you won't miss it much...

Neil Young (from the album Rust Never Sleeps):

"Powderfinger"

Look out, Mama,
there's a white boat
comin' up the river
With a big red beacon,
and a flag,
and a man on the rail
I think you'd better call John,
'Cause it don't
look like they're here
to deliver the mail
And it's less than a mile away
I hope they didn't come to stay
It's got numbers on the side
and a gun
And it's makin' big waves.

Daddy's gone,
my brother's out hunting
in the mountains
Big John's been drinking
since the river took Emmy-Lou
So the powers that be
left me here
to do the thinkin'
And I just turned twenty-two
I was wonderin' what to do
And the closer they got,
The more those feelings grew.

Daddy's rifle in my hand
felt reassurin'
He told me,
Red means run, son,
numbers add up to nothin'
But when the first shot
hit the docks I saw it comin'
Raised my rifle to my eye
Never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder
and the finger
Cover me with the thought
that pulled the trigger
Think of me
as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I'll miss her.

I have always wondered just what in the ever-lovin' WORLD that song was supposed to be about. John and Emmy-Lou? Who the heck are/were they? Which river took her? Daddy and older brother off huntin' in the which mountains? Who's the man on the rail of that ship, and where's it from? What's all the shootin' about?

So many questions, so few answers...but it's still a way cool song...

His lyrics were always far out and way cool.

How about:

"Last Trip To Tulsa"

Well, I used to drive a cab,
you know
I heard a siren scream
Pulled over to the corner
And I fell into a dream
There were
two men eating pennies
And three young girls who cried
The West coast is falling,
I see rocks in the sky.
The preacher took his bible
And laid it on the stool.
He said: with
the congregation running,
Why should I play the fool?

Well, I used to be a woman,
you know
I took you for a ride,
I let you fly my airplane
It looked good for your pride.
'Cause you're
the kind of man you know
Who likes what he says.
I wonder what's it's like
To be so far over my head.
Well, the lady made the wedding
And she brought along the ring.
She got down on her knees
And said: Let's
get on with this thing.

Well, I used to be a folk singer
Keeping managers alive,
When you saw me on a corner
And told me I was jive.
So I unlocked your mind, you know
To see what I could see.
If you guarantee the postage,
I'll mail you back the key.
Well I woke up in the morning
With an arrow through my nose
There was an Indian in the corner
Tryin' on my clothes.

Well, I used to be asleep
you know
With blankets on my bed.
I stayed there for a while
'Til they discovered I was dead.
The coroner was friendly
And I liked him quite a lot.
If I hadn't 've been a woman
I guess I'd never have been caught.
They gave me back my house and car
And nothing more was said.

Well, I was driving
down the freeway
When my car ran out of gas.
Pulled over to the station
But I was afraid to ask.
The servicemen were yellow
And the gasoline was green.
Although I knew I couldn't
I thought that I was gonna scream.
That was on my last trip to Tulsa
Just before the snow.
If you ever need a ride there,
Be sure to let me know.

I was chopping down a palm tree
When a friend dropped by to ask
If I would feel less lonely
If he helped me swing the axe.
I said: No, it's
not a case of being lonely
We have here,
I've been working on this palm tree
For eighty seven years
I said: No, it's
not a case of being lonely
We have here,
I've been working on this palm tree
For eighty seven years
He said: Go get lost!
And walked towards his Cadillac.
I chopped down the palm tree

And it landed on his back.

He must have been smoking the wrong shit there I reckon

LOL! Love that song - no, we're both livin' on Florida time these days. More like:

FLORIDAYS
Jimmy Buffett

I come from where the rivers meet the sea
That's part of why I'm so wild and fancy free
I was early into crazy ways
My folks said, "It's just a phase"
They were hoping for better days

Now in my line of work I seem to see a lot more than most
Write 'em down, pass 'em around
It's the gospel from the coast
Reflections, not just replays
Takin' time to escape the maze
Lookin' for better days

I spent a year of my life one night
On the beaches in old Beirut
Seems that all they're aimin' for there
Is to hang around and shoot
Each others' lives away
Bloody winds on a distant bay
they're lookin' for better days

Looking to the left, looking to the right
Looking to the stars to shed some light
Hoping for a breath, hoping for break
Hopin' for the give without the take

The dreamers line the state road
Just to watch the runway show
Slouched behind their steering wheels
They just watch the big jets go
Streakin' through the morning haze
Focal point of a distant gaze
Lookin' for better days

Pale invaders and tanned crusaders
Are worshipping the sun
On the corner of "walk" and "don't walk"
Somewhere on US 1

I'm back to livin' Floridays
Blue skies and ultra-violet rays
Lookin' for better days

I'm back to livin' Floridays
Blue skies and ultra-violet rays
Lookin' for better days, lookin' for better days
Lookin' for Floridays

Better days, better days
Everybody's lookin' for better days
Somewhere beneath the shining star
Better days, won't you take me to better days
Better days, I sure could use a few better days
Floridays

Another thing I insist on doing is mental arithmetic i.e. doing it in my head even though there is a calculator sitting next to me...

Even if it is just my bank statement or a till reciept, I always stand and mentally do a rough 'checksum' to see if the bar code scanner is right!!

I was standing at a till in my local supermarket once doing this staring at the reciept and the till girl asked what I was doing, when I told her she looked genuinely quite shocked and asked how could I do that with out a calculator?!!

Maybe people are getting too reliant on these 'toys' these days??

John.

Gwendolyn Boylan saved a square foot of rainforest by sending this Care2 ecard.

I suppose that does not count anymore now you have posted it on this public forum.

The carbon footprint grows every hour by a factor 12 I think the way this thread is read.

Thanks for the nice card thoug "UNCLE BRUCE" , many years to you in good health.
