05/05/2008 11:28 AM

What is the history i.e. precedent for placing the steam drum in a north south orientation on power boilers?

Did the fellow who told you that also ask you to get him a bucket of prop wash? I think somebody was pulling your leg.

Have you got the boiler drum confused with the steam turbine? Because of the gyroscopic effect of a spinning turbine, it is normally placed north to south, because if it was facing east to west, it would have to do one revolution per day, end over end, and as the turbine is acting as a large fly wheel, this would require a force to do so, with a resultant force acting on the bearings. So as power station would be built in a N,S,E,W, configuration so would the boiler drum?

Regards JD.
