About gear ratio

i want to calculate the gear ratio

i have falwing data

the rpm of the moter is 17

the distence i want to covered is 2500mm and the time required for distence covered should be between 5--10sec

for this what should be the gear ratio?

also tell me the caculation formula.

Hello Sadiq

We really need a bit more information but,

From a quick bit of number crunching, I estimate you would need a gear working on a rack with a diameter of between 330 to 560 mm! I can only go on the figures you have supplied so I have no idea if the motor would have the power to do this!

All I have done is work out how many turns the motor does in 5 or 10 seconds, then found a suitable sized diameter for the gear so that it will give 2500mm of travel for the 5 or 10 seconds!

Then again, I may have caught the wrong end of the stick!

Can you tell us what you are trying to do?

actually i want to open and close the lid of cylinder with in 5--10 sec

the weight of the lid is approx 200kg

With a ±800 mm diam wheel you would need ±1 revolution to move 2500mm. circumference = diam * pi = diam * 22 / 7.

Note that 22/7 is an approximation.

if you want ro do that in 6 seconds you would need 1 \ 6 rps = 10rpm.

assuming that the 17 means rps (revolutions per second) = 1020 rpm, your gear ratio would be 10:1020

Please state your application and more data.

For example if you intend to do drag racing you will have to allow for slippage.

hello hendrik

Actually I want to open & close the lid of large cylinder with an electric motor

So the motor which I want to use are 16 & 17 RPM and the carrying load (mean weight of lid) are approximately 200kg .moreover the gear of the motor will be drive another gear. So I want to find out gear ratio that which type (Dia & no of teeth) of gear use for this application.
