mp3 and wma formats

05/24/2008 2:12 AM

I receive songs from friends, recorded in their voice, for my listening and giving comments. I am able to play the song if it is in mp3 format, but not able to if it is in wma format. Since I do not know the reason, I checked with one computer technician.
He says that the Windows installed in my PC is unable to play in wma format, and it is a system limitation. He recommends to install new window system in my PC.
Request CR4 friends to please clarify ?

I'm sorry, but I don't know whether XP Pro had such a limitation back then. Have you been updating with SP2 (and now SP3)?

Windows Media Player certainly plays .wma's in versions updated to SP2 & SP3.

Also Windows ME on my old laptop (now very old) plays .wma files (I've just tried it). I find it hard to believe that there is a version of XP that won't play them.

Maybe you just need to make sure Windows Media Player (which comes with Windows) is accessible. What happens when you double-click on a .wpa file?

Greetings nvmani,

wma files are the product of using windows media codecs, any XP version has the capability to open .wma files.

You may need to set windows media player as the primary player in windows. Or right clk the wma. file then select 'open with' windows media player.

cheers

I agree that your system SHOULD play the wma files easily, but as a work-around solution, you might also try converting the files as needed. I can't speak to the integrity of the conversion, but if all you are after is audio quality, I have had good success.

Here is one link from download.com that is viable and free, and there are many others available from a quick search in Google.

Good luck

Go onto the Microsoft website and download the latest version of Windows Media Player. Install same.

That should take care of the problem.

Good luck and keep us posted

All above are correct of course but it may also be that somehow the pointed program to play this file has been altered.

Go into the folder options and change "open this program with" function to windows media player IF IT IS WRONG.

Agreed Case491.

I downloaded a version of real player some time ago and it automatically set itself as the default software for media files - I then couldn't play some MP4 or wma files so I had to reset program defaults to windows media player...

I use Win XP pro with all updates installed so it must be something simple as this...

It is one of the consequences of windows and 3rd party programming. You get something of the internet and it wants to fight for supremacy. The user always looses, bad windows.

In a world without walls, one does not need windows.

Windows Media Player has been the resident player program since '95. It was designed to play WMA and WMF. To play other formats, like MP3, Aiff, MP4, etc you need a CODEX, which is an MS acronym for CODER/DECODER.

Go to this site and download KLITE CODEX Pack, a free patch.

You will have to enter cut and paste the address into the address line at the top of your page.

Set Restore point, install, reboot and off you go.

Good Luck

Windows media player, or at least the latest versions, download and install the necessary codecs automatically when you ask it to play a new format of media.

There's only a few media formats that need paying for and I think most of them are supplied free with DVD player software etc...

Just a fine point, but you'd make it a lot easier for folks if you provided a hyperlink (using ), rather than the text version of the URL.

Now I found the hyper-link button. It fades to gray along with Bold, Italic, Underline and, of course, Hyperlink, when you are typing you message

www.yahoo.com

First you have to either paste the hyperlink or type it into your post. Then highlight it and the hyperlink button appears. Press that and paste the hyperlink in place - second line in the <insert hyperlink> window

If you have done everything correctly then your hyperlink turns blue.

When you go to <preview page> the hyperlink will turn red. While your text remains black.

The hyperlink remains red in your final post.

O. K., I think I've got it.

Thanks JohnDG

Perhaps some nice moderator could make this post 'sticky', so that other people can ignore the How To Use The Posting Editor post?

Thanks

Just another word on the subject. You can type anything you like as the hyperlink text, then highlight it, click the hyperlink button (as above) & add the URL.
