Those are pretty good descriptions. I must say, however, that instrument mechanics are a rare breed. So rare that I've never met one!
I, myself, am an instrument technician by training though I've learned to select instruments and how to use them. Does that make me an instrument engineer? How I wish it were that easy! I don't have a diploma that can show you so, technically speaking, I'm not an instrument engineer.
Regarding instrument mechanics, I guess the reason they're so rare is because they wouldn't have a lot of jobs to do, if it's just mounting of instruments, that is. I've lost count of all the instruments that I've found that were installed incorrectly because the mechanics or pipe fitters are looking for the easiest or most convenient place and method to put them in.
