actual evaporation

05/29/2008 6:35 AM

in a small catchment the annual rainfall is given as 750mm/yr, the runoff is 50mm/yr and the infiltration is 70mm/yr.What is the actualm evaporation from this catchment?

Well...if you believe the figures it is presumably 750 - (50+70).

But then I don't believe the figures...
It probably depends on the definition of terms like 'infiltration'. There are other things which will acount for water loss...plants, animals, aliens replenishing the supply in their space ships etc
...so I don't believe evaporation will necessarilly be the entire remainder.

You can't tell from the available info - because we don't know how much water is left.

What's a catchment anyway?

Catchment area....

The area which is 'catching' the water. In terms of a river it is the area which drains into the river via runoff, tributaries, springs etc. The term has expanded to include useage like the 'catchment area for a school', the area from which it's pupils are drawn.

Total evaporation is made up of evaporation from bodies of water or from the top layer of soil and by evapotranspiration through leaves of plants. To be available for plants it must firs infiltrate into the soil.

Evaporation do not depend on rainfall and stored water will evaporate without any rain.

Abstraction also comes into play.

Runoff determination will also depend on various factors. Intensity and duration of rain, land cover. etc.

A cultivated field may retain 75 - 95% of rain while a hard surface road may retain almost none.

As Sparky has asked - Please honor us with some more info.
