Flow Meter for Liquid Fuel

05/30/2008 7:44 AM

hi everyone,

i want to select a flowmeter for liquid fuel application.

the instrument is required for measuring flow of diesel fuel required to run a gas turbine(dual-fuel).

The vendor has suggested two options:

1 ) Coriolis Mass-Flow Meter

2) Displacement Type flowmeter

Can anyone guide me on how to selct the appropriate flowmeter for my application and what important factors are to be considered during selection??

regards,

Afifa

What is the Min, Max, Nominal flow? What is process pressure?

the flow range is between 10-2700 ltr/hr. nominal flow is designed to be 2000 l/hr.

the process temp.is approx. 80 C

process pressure is around 10 bar.

To measure diesel flow to an engine you will need an adding and subtracting meter. One side of the meter is measuring flow to the engine and the other side subtracts the return line flow back to tank. This then gives the net amount of fuel used.

The meter that I have in mind has many programmable functions and is (obviously) a four port device.

I think that Fluid Power Design Ltd in the UK sell them!

Good luck with it!

Ohpps! Miss understood the type of engine! Ignore my post above!

what important factors are to be considered during selection

Coriolis flowmeters are much more accurate and more expensive than displacement type flowmeters.

Coriolis flowtubes have no obstructions so there is very little pressure drop across them. This means that they are virtually maintenance-free. Displacement types need to be cleaned every now and then.

From what I've just said, it seems that coriolis types win, hands-down. Cost, however, may be an over-ruling consideration.

Yes, you are partially correct.

These flowmeters have no obstruction, if they are straight tube Coriolis meters. There are other types also like U tube Coriolis, and others, which will have pressure drop.

They are more acuurate, if you want mass flow measurement.

They have moving parts (jfmart please note). They are not something like Magnetic flowmeters, which has no mpving part at all. The moving parts of Coriolis are fitted outside the flow tube. (Magnetic Flowmeters can not be used for fuel oils)

Other option can be Vortex Flowmeter, which are also accurate enough (0.5%) if flow velocity is not too low. There are meters available, which take into considerations of temperature and pressure of the liquid flowing. These are quite low cost as compared to Coriolis.

I agree with Vulcan...

Plus Coriollis meters don't have moving parts. If you can afford the Coriollis meter... I think it is the best alternative...

1 ) Precise

2) It gives you also a density reading...

3 ) Easier to automate

Displacement Meters also have something called slippage. Where a small amount of product leaks between the gears or disks and contributes to errors in the reading.

I would definetelly go with a Coriollis meter ...

Hi all,

I am following close this discussion because I need to measure the fuel flow but I need to perform a "volumetric measure" not a masic one. Could anyome give some ideas?

Thanks in advance

Ernesto

Since it looks like you are just using this meter to monitor fuel usage and not for control, I'd suggest the displacement meter. I'm more familiar with diesel piston engines as opposed to gas turbines so I don't know if they have a similar injector setup with a return line back to the tank, but assuming it does you'll need two meters. You'll need to do a bit more math at the end of the day especially with dual fuel if you want mass numbers but do you want anything more than inventory management and maybe some efficiency data? Coriolis is nice, but at 2000 l/hr you've got a decent sized pipe and having to buy two of them won't be cheap. You can check the accuracy of the displacement meters easily enough since you'll still be sticking the tanks regularly anyway.
