Could it be that the reason "GUESTS" seem to disappear after the initial query is that one has to "opt into" the ensuant discussion? Would it be better if the initiator had to, rather, "opt out"?

One of the difficulties of being a "guest" is that you don't get an email notice that your thread has been replied to. You don't get a subscribed thread list so it's not easy to find your thread. Most especially if you made your query several days ago and new threads have been generated such that your own is several pages away. Just one more reason to register.
Another possible reason is that they've just plain forgotten about it!

I think sometime you just want one answer to your question. If you have to register, its one more decision to make about user name and password. I've sort of been permanently signed in, because I've forgotten which password I used.
Here's the way I figure it goes with Guests. They're passed out drooling in their keyboard at 6am when their boss walks in. The boss then gives them some stupid task, just to keep them busy, like, um, design me a pump system for solid rock. The Guest then freaks out and posts a question on CR4. As he regains consciousness, and sits there for 10 minutes, he realises that no answer from CR4 is forthcoming, just yet. So, he actually has to go to work, and Google it, and then, God forbid, actually follow links....
He gets his half baked answer, keep his boss happy for another day, then we don't hear from him till next time....
