Logic: Clock Clock

06/05/2008 5:22 AM

A clock is observed. The hour hand is exactly at the minute mark, and the minute hand is six minutes ahead of it. Later, the clock is observed again. This time, the hour hand is exactly on a different minute mark, and the minute hand is seven minutes ahead of it. How much time elapsed between the first and second observations?

Good answer JD, but I suppose it depends on how fast the clock was moving relative to the observer...

As long as one clock was not at the back of the train and the other at the front it should work out alright.

Good Answer JD

It's a doddle in Excel: copy formulas down for 60 rows altogether:-

No more 6s or 7s so has to be 204 minus 72

Hi JD,

Well, if you read down this thread, you'll see that I was indeed wrong (PLUS and MINUS so easily confused ), and you were correct.

An early response, followed by so many comments, you're easily overlooked.

Regards,

Hi DcaD

I'm with JDRetired -

At 1:12, the hour hand is at the 6 min mark and the minute hand is on the 12 min mark, 6 min ahead of the hour hand.

At 3:24, the hour hand is on the 17 min mark and the minute hand is on the 24 min mark, 7 min ahead of the hour hand.

Therefore, the elapsed time is 2:12 (2 hours and 12 minutes).

Ditto. The hour hand should be on the hour mark every hour and advance one mark every 12 minutes. Starting at 12:00 the first two times to fulfill the requirements are 1:12 and 3:24.

Re: Logic: Clock Clock

06/06/2008 2:50 AM

The first observed time must be either 10:48 or 22:48.

The second observed time must be either 08:36 or 20:36.

The elapsed time is 9 hours, 48 minutes.

The minute mark occurs only every 6 degrees, so the hour-hand of a 12-hour clock can only be exactly on a minute mark, every 12 minutes. For the conditions to exist according to the problem's definitions, these times occur only once every 12 hours.

(after all this, I hope I'm right )

Hi, Optimusprime!

The hour hand moves to a new mark on the clock face every 15 minutes each hour. The second time it moves, the minute hand reveals that 15 + 7 minutes has elapsed. But the first time the clock is read, it reveals that 15 + 6 minutes elapsed past the 15 minute mark.

So 16 minutes has elapsed between readings. (15 + 7 -6)

Exact answer for this question is 1 min 5.555 sec or 65.555 sec.

At 1.12 the hr hand is exactly at minute mark and also fulfill the condition that min hand will be 6 min ahead of it.

But at 3.24 the hr hand will be exactly at minute mark. even though fulfilling the condition that min hand will be 7 min ahead of it, the hr hand will not be at a diffrent min mark.

at 01.12.00 the gap between the hr & min hand will be 6 min

and after 1 min 65.55 sec we will find the given condition.

can u understand how it cames?....
