Fixing a Custom Cement Slide

06/05/2008 3:33 PM

We bought this house with a custom pool that included a slide and waterfall. The slide started cracking and it got so pitted you were not able to use it anymore... So I wanted to re-surface it... I had one person come in and give me a bid of 4000. to jack hammer it - rebar it - re-surface it.... I knew that was over-board. I had a couple other pool places that didn't want to touch it - because it was not a big enough project... So I think I have most of the top layer off - down to the pours cement - now I don't know what material to use to put back on the slide to make it smooth, water resilient and slick. I took the paint to Home Depot and they couldn't help me. I went to a pool company and they had no idea... So I need someone with some experience on cement based pools/slides. Can you give me some ideas… Also I would like any experience on any application issues I might run into. Thanks.

I would try skim-coating hydraulic cement on to a well moistened concrete surface, then obtaining a good quality sealer from a reputable mason supply place.

Hydraulic cement for a couple reasons - it's very strong, is realitvely easy to work and make a smooth surface, and won't allow further water penetration, creating more cracks. You can do the job yourself for short money with a fairly low level of effort and skill. Just make sure you know the stuff has a very short pot life, and will likely harden within approx. 15 minutes, so don't mix more than you'll use.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response... So then would I paint over it - or add color to the cement?

I'll second the suggestion to use hydraulic cement, and give a GA to you, since you beat me to it.

I didn't know what HC was, until I used it last year to patch a sizable crack that ran completely across a spillway, allowing water to run through, and erode supporting earth underneath. I pressure-washed the crack, as best I could to remove dirt and moss, and applied the cement, while the crack was still wet. After the patch not a drop gets through. Amazing stuff!

Seems like this site might have what you need to put the final coat on the slide.

Sounds like a simple fix, but I wouldn't relish the idea of fiberglass strands up my a$$ when the topcoat wears thin.

Hi, ToniG!

No experience in water slides, sorry. BUT (and it's a biiig butt!), I do have some experience with cracks in cement floors. They are sealed with an epoxy that dries hard and smooth.

It occurs to me that you might coat your slide with this epoxy (I think it even takes paint!) to bring it back to superb slide-ability.

Mark
