Modular Could Mean More Noise

08/17/2006 8:34 AM

Does the trend in the test and measurement industry toward more modular architectures bring with it an increased danger that noise and other errors could creep in? It can, according to an article in EDN. One possible noise source is DC-to-DC converters, increasingly being used.

If you design modular test equipment, check out the article, which outlines ways to use magnetic field measurements to track down and eliminate noise from DC-to-DC converters.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from the September issue of Data Acquisition, a new newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

Modular some time is better

08/31/2006 3:41 PM

Modular designs can be shielded for need of each module. This is very difficult in single design on single board as leakage is very likely.

There is no general rule. Modular is flexible, and safer but takes too much space, costs more. Quality cannot be bad in modular designs, unless it is a real bad design.

Good module is almost plug and play device.
