Emergency Stop Switch and Reset Switch

06/06/2008 9:04 AM

Hello, My supervisor wants an emergency stop system installed onto the sheet metal roll in the Auto shop. The system is activated via a push button switch that is hit by the knee whever the person is standing in front of the machine. I've got the pushbutton switch figured out, the problem is that my supervisor wants the emergency switch to trigger another switch nearby(normally open) that will close and then serve as a bypass to prevent the machine from being turned on again, he also wants that switch to require a manual reset after this has occured so that an accident does not occur. The problem is that the supervisor does not want the emergency stop switch to serve as the reset switch, he wants the reset switch to be located out of reach of the individual employee, thus eliminating the possiblity of simply acquiring a push/pull E-stop switch, If anyone knows of a switch like this I would greatly appreciate any information you could give me.

Thank you.

You need a Monitoring Safety Relay in there, configured for manual reset (the reset button can be more-or-less as remote as you want - and you can use a key-operated switch for super security). Several companies make them (Guardmaster/Allen Bradley, Piltz, Telemechanique etc) - sorry I haven't got time to sort out a model & circuit right now - if no-one else helps, send me a PM and I'll get back to you over the weekend.

The switch you are looking for is made by electroswitch, and is called 86 lockout switch. The switch has a coil that when tripped requires manual reset.

This is commonly used in switchgear protective relaying applications, to prevent operator from restarting faulted equipment..

May I suggest that you consult your local (country) codes relating to e-stop protection. While your manager may have some good ideas, generally the legislation will prescribe the acceptable styles of instalation for various "levels" of safety/protection required on equipment.

For instance in most safety systems in Australia, a normally open switch in such a circuit would not be acceptable and in some cases switches must be of multiple circuit to provide failsafe operation of the e-stop.

Consult the standards.

Once you've got that sorted, try Banner, Square D, Cutler Hammer, FESTO or others that specialise in industrial control materials. They all have free access catalogues on the web.

Thanks (from all of us) for the thanks.

Too often the orriginal post does not respond and we end up in suspense as to whether we've been of help.

Oh, by the way, welcome aboard. Hope to see other posts and questions from you.

May I also suggest that you also use some electrodynamic braking to bring the machine to a complete and sudden stop as well....

You could use Emergency switch of Allen bradley[as path given] which could solve your problem and also go through related links
