Mobile Phone or MEC?

06/09/2008 11:41 AM

Why do we still call it a mobile phone?

I have been reading about the latest add-on, a mini projector!

So let's see, a mobile phone can now take pictures, record video, be a calculator a calendar and organiser... It can have a touch screen, browse the internet, send emails and text messages it can play games, contain a data base of names and addresses...

AND now it can project pictures and videos in good quality onto a wall for all to see... next obvious add-on will be a TV tuner with stereo headphones...!!!

So why do we still call it a phone??? Surely a mobile Entertainment Centre (MEC) seems a better description ??

What's next for this humble phone??

John

To be honest PW, I've never really understood the Matrix...

Maybe its because I've never sat down and watched it from start to finish (sobor!!) or something...

Special effects are good though... I've just read that link and the story line and that's a good start... now I must find a copy to watch!!

You neglected to mention GPS! Applications that give directions rely on this. It would help Del get away quicker in case someone objected to him zapping slow players. I mean, who would return the golf carts they left behind, or clean up the clubs and bags left lying about? Club management would likely be upset.

I guess the more prosaic reason is that the devices started out as mobile phones. Many companies developed personal digital assistants (PDA) separately. But it was the cell phone manufacturers that ultimately combined them and cell service providers that marketed them. And since their business was mobile phones...

So, the real answer is: we humans don't like to change. It started as a mobile phone and thus it shall remain!

Electroman, my phone has a TV on it, complete with a pull out antenna. It's the Version Voyager, and yes headphones are also available. Although V CAST mobile tv isn't available in all areas as of yet.

There are actually a bunch of phones out there that have a TV application on them.

And with Slingbox, you can have TV on just about anything with an Internet connection. As long as you can get back to your slingbox, you will be able to view. Of course, on a tiny screen.

These toys will never really be practical until the power system is embedded into the body and set to run at internal body temperature. As for the headset, this will only work well when it is embedded into the cranium, and the whole thing should be voice activated.

Voice activation eh?

Can you imagine the situation in a noisy pub with other people saying something that starts your mobile dialling up someone, or deleting your databook, changing channel etc...

With Bone Conduction all ready in place , all sounds made by the implant is heard as a 'voice' in your head. The implant would also pick up the bone conduction while you speak. You can't get better fidelity and lack of back ground noise. In fact, that would negate the the need to incorporate back ground noise filters which, if need be, can be brought into use later.

It would, perforce, be tuned to your voice with it's sub-frequencies and harmonics. Since, in this system, sound is transmitted via bone conduction, there is little to no chance of some outside voice dialing you phone. The 'cell phone' is a part of you, an implant. You could set it up so the sound sensor is in your wrist. It's better than certain other orifices. It just has to be powered by the organic body, itself, at approximately 98.6 degrees Farenhieght. How do we get there?

Besides, it's better much better than speaking into your shoe.

cybernetics goes a long way.

If not cellphone (although you could continue calling it a cell phone, as the cell tower does not disappear) certainly a communications device.
