What is love?

06/16/2008 11:25 PM

It's a tough question. Is there a simple answer?

A whole gamut of things from that heady rush of first pubescent crush to putting up with you partner's foibles and smiling rather than grimacing. It's wishing you could give your your own legs to you son... .

Love, as it has come to be called, is the end stage of infection from a simple pathogen. Current speculation is that it's caused by a prion much like mad cow disease in cattle or CJD in humans and is similarly intensely virulent. Certainly all share changes in victim temperment, coordination and speech imparement.

There are different strains and as such some can be airborne (resulting in the oft-reported "love at first sight" phenomonon) but skin-to-skin contact (enough said) is by far the most infectious transmission method.

While there is no cure, afflicted individuals can live for years - perhaps decades. But even those who lead otherwise normal lives suffer a permanent form of brain damage resulting in uncontrollable actions. Often they find themselves (much to their surprise) willingly getting up off the sofa to fetch someone a soda or somesuch. Oddly, this can be the same someone who just an hour earlier gave a blistering lecture on not leaving crumbs all over the kitchen counter. This also highlights another common symptom: a dramatic memory loss. In this case both for forgetting the lecture that just occurred and also for leaving crumbs on the counter despite having been identically lectured on crumb removal 20 times before.

Fortunately for humanity, Love is one of those very unusual diseases which rather than kill its host actually insures its own survival by stimulating host procreation.

LOL good answer guest

I've always thought that 'love' is yet another four letter word that is over-rated, misunderstood and used too often.

Another four letter word can in some cases be substituted this is the word 'lust' - less debilitating than love, lust is far more practical in the procreation of the human species.

Yes, Lust is a similar disease in some aspects, but is completely unrelated.

Lust is a chicken pox-like virus contracted in puberty, resulting in temporary skin lesions known as "zits". In later life it lies dormant (much like chicken pox / shingles) most of the time and only erupts under certain conditions. It's well known to flourish and ravage the host body whenever there is an overindulgence in alcoholic beverages. Or when ambient temperatures rise to a point that necessitates public scarcity of clothing. At a beach, for example.

There is also an unproven but widely believed inverse-square relationship between severity of Lust outbreaks and the geographical distance between Love-infected individuals who have opted to suffer together via verbal or contractual affiliation.

Fortunately Lust outbreaks are generally quite short. However upon remission the afflicted often experience feelings of regret and an astonished disbelief that they did "that" and "that other thing" and occasionally "that disgusting thing there's not even a word for yet" with him/her/them.

No?

To tough a question? Perhaps this question is more for the the electrical engineering section?.. or wait.. the Bio med??.. no.. chemical science?..

I like the answers so far.

I just my old honda shadow up lake shore drive a few minutes ago..

I loved the ride and the weather, but in an entirely different way..

and half of that was just lusting over my fuel savings anyhow...

Love is when one stays awake at night, gazing at one's partner sleeping just in case one misses something. Aaaaaah!

You are a hopeless romantic, PWSlack.

Actually, love is what makes the world go 'round.

Love is a feeling one feels, when one feels that one is feeling a feeling that has never been felt before.

Er...isn't that also revulsion?

Because I'm almost positive I feel that sensation you described every year when I see my tax attourney.

Unless...I fancy him?

What you get up to with your tax attourney is your own business...especially if it's deductable.

Maybe that's why I'm not married, whenever I fall in love I keep getting punched in the stomach - a wee bit distracting eh!!?

John.
