Shouldn't crash anything as it is an independent unit. But why not go to a 1 TB?

Any of the well known ones. My preference is for Seagate.

I think the guys suggesting 1 TB did not notice that you are talking about a laptop. I haven't heard of a TB 2.5" drive yet. I also seriously doubt if you need anything that big as an internal in a laptop, unless your primary function for the laptop is making movies.

Lower density drives of a given vintage are likely to be more reliable than higher density. Any major brand of the same physical size and connection (eg. SATA or PATA) should work.

Agreed! At first I interpreted is't as isn't, because you can't pronounce is't easily.

I believe that very recently a manufacturer started making 7200 2.5" drives, you should take a look around....or use a 3.5" external drive.....

4000 rpm drive use less power, 7200 rpm use more. So you're doing an "upgrade" for less battery time?

Re: Upgrading HDD

It could well be true, but I feel that a comparison of the two drives needs to be made before that is a known fact......and if the time difference is only minutes over say 2 hours, who would really notice?

So many people ONLY use a laptop on the mains (hopefully either with the battery removed, or they plug the power cord in and out as needed like I do!! Having the battery under charge all the time is not good for it!!) so it might not affect him in any way.....
