LV switchgear busbar size

07/15/2008 10:07 AM

We want to have a LV SWGR with two sections (and a bus tie between two sections). Necessary requirement for One section is "800A, 50kA-1sec" , for the other is "2500A, 50kA-1sec". What will be the sizes of busbars?

( The size of busbar for 2500A will be greater. So, short circuit strength will be greater than 50kA-1sec. but how much? )

could you please introduce the relative standards (IEC, IEEE, ...)?

Thanks.

I assume as follows

Left hand side (LHS)-- incomer 800 Amps

Right hand side (RHS) Incomer 2500 Amps

Bus tie 2500 Amps

Then both buses to be rated for 2500 Amps.

If Bus tie is 800 Amps then LHS bus to be rated for 800 Amps and RHS bus to be rated for 2500 Amps

All the buses to be rated for 50kA for one sec.

How did you arrive at the 50 kA,have done the short circuit calculation.

Thanks for your reply.

50kA-1sec is the client requested spec (acc to his consultant short circuit calculation).

Check the "Copper Development Association" at http://64.90.169.191/applications/electrical/homepage.html.

They provide some information on busbar sizing for AC and DC applications. (along with copper pipe, architectural uses, brazing info, etc.)
