The simplest way is to use a home computer, assuming one is available (well, it's logged onto CR4 before, hasn't it?. Many years ago, an Apple II computer, now available in antique shops, was programmed to do this. Any Basic dialect will provide enough programming power to do PID (been there, done it, secondhand T shirt now on eBay...). An analog interface of some sort will be needed, which may have to be home-brew, depending on computer make and model. At the time, the AI13 interface was very useful.

If all else fails, buy a PID controller from Eurotherm (usual disclaimer). They're cheap enough nowadays.
