CAN INCREASE THE RPM OF GEAR MOTOR?

07/28/2008 12:59 AM

Dear all, Is it possible to double the speed of a gear motor by rewinding the motor to gain a speed of 2800 rpm? The original speed of the motor is 1400 rpm and gear out put is 140 rpm, we wanted to increase this to 280 rpm. Motor is 22 kw. Can any of you give us your advice on this please. Dan.

Why rewind? 22kW motors are relatively inexpensive, so simply substitute the 4-pole motor with a 2-pole one. With the new motor comes the manufacturer's warranty, and the old one becomes a serviceable spare.

The load torque needs to be considered in all this. If the existing motor is running close to maximum output, and the load torque rises with speed, then a 22kW 2-pole motor won't be enough. In which case it's back to basics and recalculate, and reselect the motor/gearbox combination. There are very few real-world loads where the torque falls with increasing speed!

If the motor is a larger size as a result of the recalculation, then the starter needs to be considered.

  • Is the internal cabling large enough?
  • Is diversity in the equipment containing the starter capable of allowing the larger load?
  • Are the fuses the correct size?
  • Is the overload the correct size and setting?
  • Is the cable supplying the motor the correct size for the larger load?
  • Etc.

the gears typically have a torque limit, so what will the torque be?
