Carr's "Metal Black" (usual disclaimer) works pretty well. It can be had from all good model shops. It is applied at room temperature with a small paintbrush.

Anodised aluminium is clear and needs to be 'fixed' soon after anodising by being put into boiling water.

Any dye can be added to the water to give the colour you want.

That's the only procedure I know of that uses boiling chemicals.
