What is the Different between Potential T/F and Voltage T/F

08/07/2008 4:06 AM

Dear All,

Have you heard any difference between Potential and Voltage?

(Voltage transformer and Potential transformer)

Thanks,

Ravi...

Hello R Perera

All transformers are Voltage Transformers.

Potential Transformers (P.T. for short), are used in measurement and control circuitry, such as at Power Generating Stations, Distribution Networks, and Substations.

Potential Transformers are made to give a standard secondary of 110 Volts, which is connected to the Protection Relays and measuring meters, but may have a primary winding of 1,000 Volts to more than 1,600,000 Volts.

A Potential Transformer is conspicuous in that the iron core is quite small, because not much power in Watts needs to be transferred, but because of the very high Voltages of the high Tension supply, the Bushing (looks like an insulator, but has a metal rod internally), normally appears to be very long.

Please note the circuit and pictures at left.

Trust you feel assisted.

Kind Regards....

Potential and voltage are just the same for instrument transformer
