Links that don't work...

08/10/2008 2:59 AM

I posted two messages today and included links to real URL's. I didn't check to see if the links I had posted actually opened a web page until it was too late to correct the postings. In fact, those links don't link to anything. When I click them, I get a message from my browser saying that it can't go there. Here are the links:

http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/worksheets/deltawye.html

http://www.usace.army.mil/usace-docs/armytm/tm5-811-1/chap3.pdf

I copied and pasted the linking tags, and placed them inside the paragraph tags. This is the procedure I follow when using the Safari web browser. This had worked well until tonight, when suddenly it didn't work anymore.

Are there forbidden zones for line breaks, or is there some other formatting irregularity I may be guilty of? If there's something broken, can you fix it, please? I will check this message, to see if the problem persists. If so, I will temporarily switch my default browser back to Firefox, which creates a link with a little icon on the CR4 menu bar.

Thank you for any and all assistance. This bulletin board is great fun, and sometimes educational as well.

I your first post, right click on the link, choose properties. You will see that there is no real address here. The links on your second posts, (right click on the link, choose properties), appear to have actual addresses. I don't now why.

I don't know why, either. Here's the html for (1) the non-working link created in Safari, and (2) the working link created in Firefox.

Sorry if the type is a little fuzzy. It's an inserted image (png) of the html, because the window manager altered the last tag of both strings if I just typed them in. I know what it's doing, but not why. For the present, I'll just use the solution that works, and maybe figure out the rest later.

This is the work-around: replace the ellipsis (...) in the linking tag with the linked URL, then a space, then repeat the URL and close the string with the link-ending tag. The link below was created in Safari.

Next order of business: learning to attach an image.

To attach an image in CR4, first of all, get the image into a J-PEG format and store it. Other formats might also work, but this is the one I know works. You click on the green camera in the tool bar. It has been a while, but I will attempt to do it here.

So I guess you have a picture of my Grandson. It was the first J-PEG I came across.

When you click on the camera, it brings up a window asking where to find the image. I went to the lower half of the screen... hit browse... negotiated my way to "My documents" and came up with the picture above. FYI, this is all done using AOL and XP Pro as an operating system. Your Mileage may differ.

This might give you an idea of how to do images here though... at least the basics... Others can certainly refine the method.

The header with the camera icon, hyperlink icon, etc. doesn't display in Safari. If you are using Safari, here's what you have to work with.

The square brackets tell you this isn't standard html notation, which uses corner brackets. There is evidently some code under the hood that translates those instructions into standard html.

Modern web browsers let you view the html source code of any open web page. A look at the code created by the icon in the posting window in Firefox showed me how to use those special tags to create a hyperlink that worked in Safari. I will study attaching images using the same method. I like Safari because it's quick. This is also kind of a fun challenge. If I get in a hurry, I can always switch over to Firefox.

I have had that happen too. When the editor puts in a carriage break for a long link, it will lose the link.

The best way to prevent this for long links is to use the link button in the tool bar. To use it highlight text or a picture and you will see the icon become active on the tool bar. Click the icon and input the link in the URL box.

If you don't have the icon, Highlight a word and 'Right click' on the mouse. The Menu should have 'create link'. You then can put in the URL

You can also test the links in the 'Preview Comment' page

Weren't you paying attention, when it was explained in detail when your links failed to work before? Shame! Here it is again.
