Camera Question: Steps of Gradations in One Pixel

08/19/2008 9:20 AM

A line chip camera having 4000 pixels with each pixel having subinformation of 256 gradations, then how can we determine how many steps of gradations are in one pixel when a area scan chip is in a camera which has 4.2 megapixels?

One pixel contains 256 levels of information and so it has to have 8 bits to represent that information.

the area scanned is the product of the 4000 pixel line length and the linear pixel count.

So for 4.2 x 106 so the linear distance in pixels for 4.2 million is 1050 pixels...

The resulting image will be 4000 x 1050 pixels with each pixel represented by 8 bits or one byte.

is he speaking of a chip camera with 4000 pixels in one single line, as they have in linear scanners and fax machines? In this case ~470 dots per inch would allow this to scan 8.5 inch sheets of paper line by line, as is now done by roll feed or flat top scanners?

Is that the application?

I don't know what the application is but Electroman is correct in any case.
