Thesis idea requests

08/15/2008 8:08 AM

At CR4 there are constantly requests for ideas for projects or thesis...

What is the nature of the education system where these requests come from? I guess I am not understanding what these projects are like.

In the US if you are doing a senior engineering project, the prof often either gives you some guidance, or gives out a list of possible projects. For a Masters, there is usually a faculty adviser who works with the student to develop a thesis topic.

Is that not happening in places like India?

Quite so.

Further, items suitable for theses are usually sponsored from some large industrial concern. It is in the interests of some of these businesses for a study of this type to be carried out. Funding the study is the way that the business expresses the value of the study to its future operations. And if it is of commercial interest, then it won't be found in a pan-global forum like CR4 lest the competitors should get hold of the ideas and run off with the marketplace.

Academia are not over-unity money generators!

Academia are in the best position to advise, though, for these are the points where the industrial need for the thesis would become apparent.

Well Lets suppose that you are getting a masters or PHD in Mechanical engineering, at a school, and the nearest industry or factory is a couple days away by local transportation...

The academics at that school may have a degree but be low on experience, the candidates have absolutely no experience, and so it is the blind following the halt.

Getting a degree is the apparent goal, and any port in a storm, but it is probably a better idea as PW has pointed out, to get a degree where the school and local industry can collaborate.

It seems that the present state is that students go to schools to get advanced degrees to make higher pay, without getting experience to make that education relevant.

The schools push the idea of advanced degrees, to get the cash flow.

Industry gets degreed "engineers" with out even the insight to come up with their own topics for research, because they don't have any relevant or practical experience or insights.

So the real world engineers on this site get to dispense their wisdom (gratis) to prop the whole thing up.

By the way, it is not just India, There are schools here in the states that are churning out MBA's with no prior business experience...

Add to that the online schools, and soon the degree will be seen as merely a 'possible indicator' of knowledge in a field.

Yes, it looks sometimes like nonsense. If any one person claims that he/she is capable to get a PhD,Master degree this person should be being at least capable formulate independently own actual ideas and project topic. Otherwise here is a big question whether he/she had properly choosen one's occupation at the time.

But I wouldn't blame that such a things occured with post graduate students in India's education system only as well as at any particular country. In any place of planet we have different levels of versity/college education quality along different level of teachers and students.

If in USA there are a good situation with that we would be only happy and hope that this good practice (when all students could be developing their own very creative and very actual projects) will spread over the world.
