Recycling Credit Cards

08/21/2008 3:15 AM

Does anyone know where i can recycle PVC Credit card size plastic cards?

Preferably in the UK or Europe.

We make card printers and use a lot of cards in the manufacturing/ testing processes and these currently go to landfill but ideally it would be great if they could be recycled.

Hello Andy K

  1. Are these actual Credit Cards?
  2. Are these just PVC pieces, the same size as Credit Cards?
  3. Do the PVC Pieces have Personal or Identifying information on them?

Reply here, with

Kind Regards....

These are not actual credit cards but they are the same shape and size. I suppose it might be better to use the term sercuity / id card. Some with a magnetic strip but most without it.

These cards are used to test the printers so only have generic test information on them. Currently they go to landfill band are of absolutely no use to anyone wanting to scam personal information.

Hello,

We have a Pilot Plant ON DEMO in Mumbai, India, which converts 25TPD Waste Plastic in any Form, including PVC, Medical & e-Waste into LDO of similar volume in liquid form.

In case you are able to Pool Plastc Cards And any Plastic Waste, minimum 25T per shipment, to reach us, we would welcom it as a commercial Deal.

Thanks for the try Sparkstation but unfortunatley they only take windows and doors.

We use approximatley 0.75 ton of cards per annum but are unable to store this many and would ideally like a regular but smaller scale pickup.

We are a large shredding facility in Australia and we shred plastic credit cards and gift cards for the major banks in Australia, does your company use this type of plastic for recycling??

Hello Andy K

Perhaps it is time to encourage your local Council to organize collection of such useful plastics, glass, metals etc.

If you were here, in Christchurch NZ, there are recycling Companies who take most materials.

Your cost to sent to Braintree on the would be too expensive, no doubt.

Kind Regards....

Unfortunatley our local council would not have anything to do with it as it is commercial waste. Also the little hilters on the council recycling trucks would probably reject them anyway (tho that wouldn't be for any good reason!)

I / My boss am/is looking for the most cost effective solution. This would seem to be one that costs us nothing or makes us money.

Then the best, cost-effective solution is to stop making waste plastic credit cards.

Can they be reprinted afterwards? How about reprinting them as playing cards. Might be a niche market for the casinos.

I wish i could but we print on both sides to test them!

And it would be quite an expense to do this!

Is there a local electrical wiring manufacturer where you are?

I know that we segregate our PVC from the wire strip machines and send that for recycling. They love it because its very good purity (except for the pigment).

If there is, then maybe they have a recycler/customer that would also like to obtain your waste material.

Contact a local wood working club.

While in a wood working store over the last Christmas holiday I saw an ink pen that a gentleman had made. It had a white stripe in the wood running at around a 30 degree angle. He created the stripe by laminating an old credit card in the wood. Then he cut out his blank and turned the wood and plastic laminate to create the outside of his ink pen. You might even try contacting a wood working supplier. Tell them you have laminating material of standard / regular size. Having all of the cards the same size makes it easier to set up a small production line to make the laminate boards. You may even create a market for this product and turn your scrap in to cash.

In case there are not many pen turners out there here is a link to see what I am talking about. http://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKEZLAM91.html

The "color grain" wood blank is made by laminating woods that have been stained different colors. I have not used this material and understand it can be tricky because it is a laminate. But there is a market for it.

Re: Recycling Credit Cards

what is the annual volume of these waste cards? If the volume is small, just accumulate them and stack them neatly in cardboard cartons of about 1 cubic foot capacity. That will weigh about 60 pounds each. Stack them until you have a full skid and they will be a fairly pure saleable amount. If there is a chip in them or a mag strip, they may not have any recycle value.
