Water Cooled Genset

08/22/2008 12:00 AM

We are installing a 1250 KVA diesel generator set. Is it possible that this genset would be water cooled by means of a cooling tower? My concern here is that we may have a start=up problem considering that the cooling tower will derive power also from this genset.

Kumskip,

This a common practice.

The cooling system for this (towers and pumps) for this purpose are generally run by thermostat and don't start up until after the load has been picked up.

Just make sure that the pump and fan motors for this are included in you power requirements or you might get bitten as you approach Generator capacity.

you can provide a timer activated switch form the gen set Breaker panel and connect your cooling water pumps and cooling tower to generator breakers panel and set the timer in such way that timer will activate the cooling water pumps and cooling towers with in 30 seconds of generator breakers are closed this was what i do whenever i opt for water cooled generator sets. it is working in all the installations i have installed the gen sets.

CRM,

I have seen this done both ways and they work equally as well.

The delay allows the load to step in instead of one step.
