How to Put Imprint Logo Onto Polyethylene

08/26/2008 6:06 AM

I am looking for a low cost way to put my logo onto high density polyethylene plastic sheets in a large quantity. I would like to emboss it or lightly engrave it onto the plastic. The sheets or coils are fifty feet long and six inches wide and are 1/32nd inch thick or 1/16th inch thick. I was thinking iabout impressing with a heated die of some kind. Paint won't stick to polyethylene. I tried Krylon Fusion plastic paint. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Screen printing or silk printing technique could make done this work for you.

There is a foil inks as well along with tampon printing [pad printing] machine.

In a word you need ink that could be dried [polimerized] without absorb in printing media. As well you need an appropriate equipment.

Printed labels are the most cost effective way, because the parts are ready.

Heated die embossed logo on PE parts is not possible because of quality problems.

Ink (paint) will stick to polyethylene (just look at your shopping bags), you must "treat" your plastic. In industry this is done with a corona treater, zapping the plastic with 10,000V.

There are many alternatives you can use and it is limited by your budget. The trick with ink/paint is to get the surface energy of the substrate (HDPE) correct for the application to be successful. Mechanical engraving is another alternative. Labels may be the least expensive for equipment purchase but the most per application.

Give these people a call (I have no relation with them and know nothing about their equipment).

I have worked with videojet, marsh, imaje, and other various dot matrix printers over the last 20 years. Imaje seems to be the most user friendly although their fluids are a little costlier.

You may be able to emboss it with a laser engraving machine.

Thank you for the great responses!. I was thinking of trying heated embossing but since that is not possible, clear self adhesive labels would be the easiest it seems. Engraving is beyond my means right now.

Hello,

With sufficient pressure and an embossing die it should be possible to emboss, hopefully you need to emboss near the edge as you will need to back up the pressure applied with the air driven or hydraulic cylinder from behind with some sort of c-frame, if you need it portable. It is thinkable to have a unit without c-frame, colouring would then be an issue.

I believe there are also ultrasonic solutions to what you are trying to do, some use colours!

What do you think about the possibility of using steel letter punches attatched together and pressed into the plastic? I wonder if anyone makes punches with one inch (23mm) letters?
