Determining keyway size for a shaft

09/04/2008 12:19 AM

Is there an industry standard, generally accepted practice or engineering formula for determining the size (width/depth) of a keyway and key on a given sized steel shaft. For example 1/2", 5/8" 3/4" and so on. Additionally the shafts would be threaded to accept the approriate sized threaded nut for the shaft.

Hello fastener

You do not list your location or country, which may easily be done in your Member Profile, and it will autoupdate.

Yes, there are Standards for Keyways, but these are for various areas of the world:

http://www.roymech.co.uk/Useful_Tables/Keyways/keyways_BS46.html

http://www.baldor.co.jp/image/pdf/SHAFTKEY.pdf

There are others, look under Google Results 1 - 10 of about 136,000 for keyway standards. (0.21 seconds)

Please read about the present difficulties, here: http://www.technoflex.dk/default.asp?Action=Details&Item=233

Kind Regards....

The Machinerys Handbook (Machine Elements) covers American and British keyway standards. And if you don't have access to the Machinerys Handbook, well .............. that is an issue all in itself.

Unfortunately, the document is too large, has 380 MB. Is not possible to send via e-mail. I will try to do a copy to a CD.

Kind regards

Hi Aurel Mares,

Someone has shown me the link http://mihd.net/e6g04j where I have downloaded the Machinery Handbook. Therefore I do not need the CD.

Thank you.

Elvis Chong

Hi Sparky,

That link was OK , I downloaded 27 Ed Machinery Handbook OK.

I would not have liked to copy all that from my paper version.

Cheers Garth

Hello garth

I did eventually get the Download, thanks.

Here in New Zealand we are at the far end of a long thin pipeline to the Internet.

There are variations in depth and width due to the power being transmitted location and space available for the key etc.

But for square keys it is generally accepted for the key depth to equal 1/2 the square dimensions.

The range in shaft size will determine what size keyway you'll use.

There isn't any rule of thumb but there is a chart that that specifies what the acceptible size to use.
