Long-term pollution and recycling are part of the "Materials Efficiency" Equation.

Iron, Steel and metals in general are easily recyclable.

If the metals are not recycled, eventually tectonic plate movement will slowly recycle them.

Plastics are made from withdrawals from the Planetary Petroleum Bank, are not as easily recyclable, and in fact many plastics disintegrate or degrade to smaller and smaller particles, without being decomposed, thus they remain as dust, for many thousands of years.

Cast Iron is the most efficient material for use in Pump Bodies, housings and the like.

ya accepted but but there is a huge demand for metal and corrosion is a major problem inside the casing and impellers.. we use aluminium for lower capacity motor bodies now but i'm just looking for a change

Plastic pumps are widely used in the chemical industries where a metal would be unsuitable. Hydrochloric Acid is one fluid where a plastic pump is ideal.

Way back in the mid 1980s Lola racing company installed a racing car engine that was mainly made of plastics (TORLON) by Amoco Chemical Company.

The only parts of the engine that were made of metals were the cylinder liners, crankshaft and the exaust outlets, TORLON is a "Polyamidimide and has great torsion and impact strenth.

The engine itself was developed by Polimotor Research, inc. of Fairlawn, NJ, during the 1984 race season.

In only it's third race, the Lola T-616 car was still running strong when it finished the New York 500 endurance race at Watkins Glen.

Just a little thought from me to those who think that it is impossible to produce an engine made predominately of plastic!!!!

There are loads of plastic cased pumps on the market. At the moment they are mainly small units (100s of watts) but as the economy of material rmakes it viable they will get bigger. The same applies to electric motors.

The plastics impellers are so better for waterpumps in cars but the housings could bear only small pressures and is not easy to make like in cast iron,still less than that when the pieces are not thin:same for machines those injects plastic or those you press warm.Neither is easy to repair:How to weld it? and is a good quality plastic really cheaper than iron?.May be the idea is good only for small water pumps or for special purposes like already in use fuel pumps for cars.-
