Honestly, I think that levees are as stupid as someone living in a flood plain. Since I was in elementary school (40+ years ago) New Orleans was taught as an example of what not to do. It is sad that even after repeated flooding, they do not learn to not build in a flood plain / river delta. Any city planners that approve such foolishness are a waste of taxpayers dollars.

Although the Dutch seem to do it OK. Maybe we could have them give Nawlins some pointers.

I wonder how well they will do when the ocean levels rise with the melting Antarctica ice, Greenland ice, and Arctic Ice. This is only a preview of what is happening. Expect to loose half of Florida and any other low level areas.

At least some people are being proactive .

Hello blackhorse

We are interested in your idea for levees.

Reply here, and they will be commented upon.

The Forum does have a Spell-checking facility, (Click on the ABC button, after making your Post), which may avoid misunderstandings.

Kind Regards....

Hello blackhorse

for Posting again, which reminded me to reply.

I can understand what your design looks like, John.

But levees and dams are normally placed in position to remain in that position for a long period, perhaps as permanently as possible.

Often dams are poured-in-situ concrete, likewise levees the same.

Is your design intended for temporary placement?

What materials are your design levees made from?

Remember levees and dams normally are made from very heavy materials, which ensure water pressure does not easily lift them.

Kind Regards....

hello sparkstation;yes materials are a concern, remember levees are not as large as dams.material of choice is concrete[fiber mix prefered],and the mix[psi] is like all jobs to be determend by the specs for that area,of course they can be left in place and built as large as one deemed necessary, this design would make replacement easier and more time saving,up to a point.after a certain height and width it becomes a dam, don't you agree? most can be poured in place-and lifted by crain to place.try this with models if you will.of course reinforcement is added as in all concrete,[still favor fiber mesh],a rubber sealeant can be used to seal the conections and provide movement.and replacement.been doing heavy construction for 41 years and learn something everyday.i have incerted a steel sleave into some to make the specs work as they were designed.hope to here from all of you,if you see flaws in this[alltho this works]or have a way to better the design please let me know, you never know we together might come up with a design that is not only safer-easier-cheaper and most of all life saver,i've enjoyed this and hope to further this conversation, thank you john blackhorse

Blackhorse,

There are a number of us highly interested in your ideas, but what are they? New Orleans is already in a bowl, surrounded by water, and subject to natures fury from the south. The location of this beautiful city, confounds, and defies logic. Numerous disasters, as yet unknown, will indeed, flood the city again, and again, and again. The Army Corps of Engineers has looked at the alternatives to the levies ,ad infinitum, and always come to the same conclusion: Raise the entire city. The only way to reduce the effects of hurricane force winds, and rapidly rising water levels, is to built a aerodynamically efficient house, on a barge. Good luck with that.

hello everyone;sorry for the delay.,also will use spell check thankyou.so here it is in a nut shell so to speak.I'm sure all of you are familiar with the stick men we drew as kids,[please bear with me]I'll ask each one of you if you are interested in this,[ I'm sure most if not all will want to pick it to death]anyway draw a stick man or a dumb bell, draw one more and cut off the end .fit one end into the other in a locking fashion.extend the height and you have a section that is moveable, portable[depending on size]google sketch-up does this fine.each end is moveable by swiveling in its socket,I've used this on farms in remote places and it works.you use a sealer to help on leakage.so fire away, and thankyou for your time.

Good idea for small applications, similar to Porta Dam, but for floods I think the Water filled dams are the simplest and quickest to erect.

hello imintowater;i didn't mean to leave you out of the discussion.sometimes the answer is in front of you.and the old saying-can't see the forest for the trees.sometimes the answer can be so simple that to make it great is to have people on this or any forum to take it apart and put it back together again in a better way,i learn something everyday in all walks of life.sometimes the corps can't see anything with out money or politics.this goes for a lot of situation's,in different things,i hope this will bring all the people who want to together and solve one of the worlds biggest problems.sure the easiest way would be buildup of the area but this is not always feasibal.as you very well know-location location location-is whats in most people's head,as long as people will be people they will build in places where they don't belong.i hope to here from you soon and more people like us who want an answer to most of todays problems, thankyou john blackhorse
