Request for: Fishing Hobbies user group

09/08/2008 9:01 AM

Jusup, one of our active contributors put in a request for a fishing user group, but it got lost in the weekend shuffle. He wrote:

I think there are some member at CR4 that have fishing hobbies like me, how about to add fishing hobbies user group?

As a fellow angler, I couldn't agree more. So, if you're so inclined, join the CR4 Fishing User Group. And tell us your best fish tales!

Thanks,
- Chris

I am a very beginner in salt water fishing.

At first i don't like fishing but now i start to enjoy to "drop for a while " some of my engineering work burden into the sea together with hook and bait and go back to the land w/ more fresh head to continue my engineering job.

I want to have some shared information about salt water fishing methode and so on from others who have more experience. e.g best time for fishing , best bait , etc , thanks.

my motto : engineering + fishing = optimum result of engineering job.

Geeeh.. I'd never had the real good chance to get hook up in fishing hobby but would be better. Couples of beers ( Ice House) and some nice spot and I believe it should be great stuff but again the time frame is some major obstacle here always, can't win! Enjoy the time and have fun all the time, good fishing there.. My Friends

Fly Fishing,

MC

What kind of tales would be preferable? Sci Fiction, Fantasy?

Hah! Almost all fish stories would easily fit into one or the other category...

One fisherman has been talking his story to his counterpart how he could catch giant 1 metre carp! His mate returned him another story how he could catch immensely big carp and find inside its burning up candle. Somewhat shocked first teller asked to his mate being some confused:"I do agree to cut my carp shorter up to 30 cm but would you please to extinguish the candle at least?"

My son wants to fish but I don't know much about it so I'd subscribe just to learn something.

If you want to learn more about fishing, pick up some fishing magazines from the news stands. In-Fisherman is a good one for fresh water. I don't know the salt water ones. You don't need all the fancy equipment that their advertisers are trying to sell, but it could give you some ideas on what to use to catch which fish. You don't need to catch big trophies to start with. Younger kids, especially, quickly lose interest in fishing if they aren't catching a lot. To start out, talk to the local bait shop and find out where you could catch a lot of pan fish and what they are biting on. Then go and catch a lot, let most of them go, and take a few home to eat. Soon your son will be "hooked."

One of the best ways to learn about a particular fishery is to hire a local guide. Being observant you'll learn the setups, spots and have a good experience. From there you can decide how far you want to take the hobby.

Hmm, I am not sure I see the relationship to engineering. Also, is there a shortage of fishing site on the web where people discuss the various forms of fishing? Just in a few minutes i have found many pages of fishing blog sites relating to both fishing in general and many discussing the specific forms like flyfishing. I guess by natural extension, if you have one devoted to fishing hobbyist couldn't you then have one devoted to fantasy football, snow boarding, hunting, etc..

Are you kidding? Look at all the engineering goes into fishing tackle, boats, motors, the whole enterprise is dependent upon engineering. Well, nowadays. Back when it was a cane pole, length of line, cork bobber, a sinker, and a hook, it wasn't, then it was just relaxing fun.

Engineering is also involved in the equipment and facilities directly supporting golf, football, stock car racing, bicycle racing, tennis, gambling, beer manufacturing, cooking, etc. and probably to a greater degree of engineering.

Your arguments have a ground point but there are some reasons that could justify of this hobbies group to be planted in cr4.

To my mind fishing is the quintessence of human activity which rooted in at ours genes. To be successful and devoted fisherman means to put in combination a non-combinating things in order to win a fair prize: passion and cold analytical mind, rocket like reaction and endless patience, applying innovative approaches with old good traditional methods. Isn't it a trust engineering from its best side?

I do not intend to usurp this decent occupation from narrow professional positions. I'm wondering are there fishing communities amongst other professional groups [doctors, military men, lawyers, taxi drivers etc]. Likely there are. But I'm supposing fishing for them is the only weak soothe to feed their hungry for creative thinking brains.

Hunting and gambling could be compete with fishing of course. But I do find fishing as more wide spread and more if you like democratic activity as it's more acceptable regardless of anyone's gender, age, social and financial status. And fishing skill successfully comprises a hunting, a gambling hazard and even good cooking at all along with long adventure car/tractor/tank driving, shipping, swimming in cold water, crawling and climbing on the vertical wall [if your mate could catch more than you could] .

And jokes about fishermen are really something special .

Living near the Columbia river allow me to see some pretty big fish. On a charter in 1999 I caught a 9 foot sturgeon estimated to weight 450 lbs. Had to release it. I should have cut the line after it jumped but I just had to get a close up view. In 2000 I caught a 42 lb silver salmon. I was all thinking how great it was until I got to Ilwaco Washington where they had an 84 pounder on display- state record- on the same day I catch what for me was a big one. Talk about getting some perspective.

So far this year I have caught three keeper sturgeons. 44,46 and 57 inches. They have to be between 42 and 60 to keep'em.

going fishing to a small lake this weekend. http://www.traveloregon.com/Explore-Oregon/Mt-Hood-Columbia-River-Gorge/Outdoor-Recreation/Water-Sports/Boating/Hideaway-Lake-Campground.aspx

I haven't tried for trout in years. It's a whole different set of tackle and poles to deal with.

in 1999, 2000, and 2001 I limited out in both Washington and Oregon. I stopped fishing in Washington because of the licensing expense.

There is almost no better way to unwind and design at the same time. I am an avid Trout fisherman in the mountains of both Georgia and North Carolina. I can and have resolved design issues while on the creeks. Nothing is more peaceful.

To learn how to salt water fish, go out on a pier and just ask, most people will be glad to give you tips.

Count me in. I am especially interested in the wide variety of techniques and approaches this group will offer.

For example I have noticed a resurgance of jug fishing at night in the delta. It has become a social event where a boat cruses up a nd down the bayou and drops off floats (jug) with a short line, hook and bait. They tend the lines, and collect fish while enjoing the trip. It is from anything from a canoe with 1-2 people to party barges with a dozen aboard.

Good day all,

I live in a semi-arid country but never travel without a fishing rod under the back seat for those rare opportunities when I by luck discover some new virgin water.

Yep! I'm definitly in on this one.
