school help please.

09/09/2008 5:10 PM

hey.

ive got a school project, and it is required that we interview an engineer.

and i have no idea where to look.

if there was an engineer on here, or if anybody knew where i could get ahold of one, just for 4 or 5 quick questions, id be extremely grateful.

thanks.

I think nearly all of us are engineers here. If your instructor will accept this interview format rather than a face-to-face interview, why not post your questions for open response along with a few biographical questions (field, age, family status, years experience, gender, etc...) and see what sort of statistical responses you can chart. Steve S. did a similar project here a few months back and got fairly good results, if I recall.

If you need to do a face-to-face, any of your local manufacturing plants should have someone willing to answer a few questions.

Excellent idea! There are so many Engineers, Technologists, Technicians, Scientists of many nationalities on this site it should be possible to draw up some questions that give an international picture of the profession.

For example:

1. Why did you take up Engineering as a profession.?

2. How do you rate your social status compared with (say) Lawyers, Financial Analists, other none creative or productive professions?

Plenty of engineers here that would be willing to answer a few questions. Is there a specific type of engineer you are after (electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, etc).

If your really lucky some of us may be local to you (although I doubt it).

Why don't you add to your profile where you are located.?

I think it is likely someone is relatively close to you. Within 100 miles or so.

The city you live in very likely has a civil engineer on staff. If there is any type of manufacturing in your town there will be engineers at those companies. If there is a university there with an engineering program there will be engineers there..

We are not so hard to find. Tell us where you are an maybe we can recommend someone.

Any factory or engineering firm will have plenty of engineers on staff. Even if you're living in a small town that has no industries, which is highly unlikely, there will still be a town engineer to ensure that the town amenities are properly maintained. Just remember to call ahead to make an appointment before you go for the interview.

Check the yellow pages for engineers, professional and/or consulting. There is bound to be at least a few, then give one of them a call and explain your situation. Most engineers would jump at the chance to talk to students and encourage them. Good luck.

I think we may have been deserted.

I think we should start our own questions.

1. How many engineers consider themselves to be comfortable and competent at the spelling and grammar of the English language?

Re: school help please.

09/13/2008 12:11 AM

Had I not got it wrong, you are asking questions you could use to interview people and you don't have them now, right?

I believe this is a question for HR, but HRs in area that I've worked with (many parts in Asia, some in Europe, and briefly in US) normally give you a head that satisfy what you specified in you advertisement only, they don't care if that person would be contributive to the job, how good he/she would be in the industry and so on, most likely because of HR do not have the knowledge and specialty of the concerned field to distinguish people of specialized field, like engineers. Actually, a lot of companies are recruiting similar positions for years in Asia, without even knowing that is really hurting the company's reputation, and that shows also this kind of company might not treat their staffs well.

I have a few such questions, see if they help.

In the interview, you might want to know if

1.the person has the character that fit your company, so you might ask "would you please tell me about yourself?", the question can give you all the information of how this interviewed guy would communicate with others, is he/she a confident person or not. If he/she is a fresh graduate, there would be not much experience to tell, and you might ask his/her project experience.

2.the most important thing about interview is you want to distinguish if the applicant would be helpful and contributive to the position, especially engineering is fields with specialties, you cannot fill the position with just somebody. For fresh graduates, you might ask them some well defined engineering questions to see if they've done what they are supposed to know. For experienced veterans, give them job related questions so as to see if they fit the position. Some gives better answer to the others, there might be books or information on the Internet that help them, just like people are benefited from CR4, but that doesn't mean the one gives better answer is better, they are fitter though. Normally HR would have scanned all applicants and if you want talents to be interviewed, they normally do not survive HR and there is no much point in asking questions only talents could answer, unless you interview all applicants without HR scanning. What to ask, is now field specific. Details of how the applicant handle things also shows his/her capabilities and attitudes.

3.You might want to know if the person is trying to just make a life or really interested in the kind of work you are recruiting, then ask them why he/she wants to be such an engineer.

4.You might want to know if his/her expectation matches with what your company could offer, then ask them what would be his/her future plan, or what is his/her expected career path.

5.To counter check his/her interest to question 3, you can also ask the applicant of his/her hobbies and the concerned participation, to see if he/she is a keen participant.

Interview is all about interpreting people's future behaviours/acts by reading their past (experiences, resume); which is actually always NOT reliable because people are talented, they learn and they improve, in good ways and bad ways. The most important thing about interviewing is to be observing in interview to see if the applicant fit!

Some people always put communication related questions to applicants without really realizing that communication is a bidirectional process but applicants got all the blames if the result is not good. Actually it is a problem with both parties, the interviewer and the interviewee. In normal working life, poor communication of certain parties might have a lot to do with management and company culture; a certain employee could not have much influence on the mega environment although they are blamed most of the time. So, I don't suggest this kind of question unless the interviewer is really smart!

Hope these 5 questions would help!

Cheers,

AC Wing.

1.Real Name:- PAZHOOR GOPALA PANIKKAR (P.G. Panikkar)

2 .Location (City & Country):- HYDERABAD(India)

3.Qualifications:-

(a)B.Sc with Physics Main and Mathematics subsidiary ,

(b)Associate member ship examination of institution of engineers (India) in Metallurgical Engineering (Equal to a Degree in Engineering) ,

(c) Accredited as Chartered Engineer(India) by the Institution of Engineers(India),Kolkutta.

4.Experience in particular field:-

Experienced for more than 45 years in Design, Engineering, construction commissioning and operation of Iron making plants sintering plants Raw Material Handling etc of Rourkela steel plant ,Bokaro steelplan (Steel Authority of India Limited) ,Visakhapatnam steel plant(RINL) ,Ispat Metallics pvt Limited, Ispat Industries pvt Limited, Ajokutta Steel Plant of Kogi state Nigeria etc.

Worked in the Training department of Vizag steel also for a small time.

Visited many countries like Russia, China, South Korea ,Dubai, Iran, Azerbaijan ,Nigeria, Georgia(CIS) etc for official purposes. Was Consultant to Ispat Industries, Gharda Chemicals and many other industries in India.

At present I am Director(Technical) of MahadevmetaliksPvt Limited ,Hyderabad .

I am doing freelance engineering consultancy also based in Hyderabad.

5. Age:- 66years

6. E-mail:- pgpanikkar@rediffmail.com

7. Present Status (Working/Retired);-

Working as Director(Technical) of Mahadevmetaliks Pvt Limited and doing freelance engineering consultancy also based in Hyderabad.

8.

Would you like to help others when posed with problems in your field? -

Yes. I do help and will like to help always with in my limits. But I do not like to help people who come to me with out proper home work at their end.

9 .Your comments regarding Engineering Profession: -

Engineering is a good profession which gives job satisfaction always. There will be new challenges always even if one is long experienced in the field. I used to sacrifice my time, energy and youth to learn new areas. I am lucky to get new challenges always as I have worked in many new green field projects.

My experience in ASCO Nigeria in 2004 is the one of the many jobs in which I faced lot of challenges. I had to commission a sinter plant of 360M2 which was left by Russian engineers about 25 years or so ago. The Cable tunnels were flooded, control cables pilfered, Trained personnel and engineers were not available .No body knew where the relevant drawings were kept. Still with all these difficulties the team headed by me commissioned the plant against all odds.

2.I should also admit that unlike to day, the knowledge level of engineers in India in those old post independence years of 50s and 60s were not to the desired level compared to the engineers of developed countries. Experts from other countries used to be employed by Indian Industries .

But looking back, I should say that the public sector industries in India are really the mothers of Indian industries. They have not only created very good engineers, but also have given food, shelter and fertilizer to many private industries to grow and flurish.

With new generation of engineers coming out from better equipped engineering colleges of India, the engineering profession has bright future here. I believe with hard work, dedication and better exposure, the new generation engineers can change the face of India to a much better tomarrow.

10.

Do you feel satisfied with payments made to engineers compared to other profession? Or, it is only donkey work with less compensation.

In my initial days the payments were very meager to make both ends meet. In public sector steel plants the salary I used to get was very poor. More over rules of seniority etc are bottle necks for getting faster promotions. Merits, knowledge and hard work were not recognized. But after I shifted to private sector, I had better salary.

I feel that in the factory and plant operation jobs engineers have to be alert always .One has to make the production moving with quality and quantity .Unplanned stoppages, break downs cannot be tolerated. One cannot compensate tomorrow what one should have achieved to day!! What you achieve tomarrow is tomarrows production.

Time lost in a day for production, projects or in life never comes back. Procastination has no place in this profession.

Regards,

P.G.Panikkar
