Multiple driver to a shaft

Can we connect multiple driver to a shaft. Turbine, Motor/ stand by motor to one shaft. One shaft is used to run several pumps/compressor. But is it acceptable, more than one driver (drives the shaft) is connected to a shaft.

If yes can you give some example, where it is configured?

Yes, in Municipal Water Pumping installations.

  1. It is extremely important that each motor is capable of turning the full load of the connected machinery.
  2. It is also extremely important to have proper safety procedures, where both motors may be locked out for work to be done on the mechanical equipment.
  3. It is also extremely important to ensure that both motors cannot run at the same time, and this must be done by mechanical interlock also electrical interlock between the motor starters.

Do not energise both motors on a single shaft, and have the machinery (mechanical load) connected, because one motor will do most of the work, overheat and fail.

In the past applying two drivers on the same shaft was also used on large sea-going ships. One driver was for instance a turbine, the other one a diesel engine used for manoeuvring. When one of the drivers is running, de other one is clutched out. When you want to use two drivers on the same shaft at the same time you have to make sure that their response to additional load etc is exactly the same (powering up and down time, torque, max power, etc). In the company where I work we have several ships with diesel-electric propulsion, with two electric motors mounted on the same shaft, driving one propeller. This looks like if it is one electric motor, but if fact two separated electric motors are mounted on one shaft. It is possible to run both motors at the same time, without using power from the first motor to drive the second one.

Assuming you are only using one driver at a time you can use over running sprag clutches.

This is common on pieces of equipment with primary and stand by drives. We do this with the flat top conveyors in car plants.

As I recall they were either Dodge or Morse clutches.

It is done on most twin engine helicopters. very complicated if both drivers operate at the same time...
