Will Diesel Oil Erode Plastisol?

10/07/2008 12:01 AM

See title.

I am going to put some plastisol into the plastic housing, but the whole plastic housing will immerge in the fuel (diesel oil).

So will it be eroded??????

I sure hope not! It's been the filter media potting compound in fuel and oil filters since they switched from cotton shearings and rice hulls.

There's a growing number of manufacturers going to urethane, but that's more for costing and performance reasons.

Doesn't your plastisol requires heat to "cure"? And will your plastic hold up to the temp?

This plasitisol requires heat to cure (our process is 180 degree C for half an hour).

The plastic will not hold up to the temp. It's range is from -5 degree C to +100 degree C.

THANKS

Hi, dgankey!

And in future if you have doubts like this, try a rag lightly soaked in the liquid gently somewhere on the surface of the solid. When you rub it off with a dry cloth, if the cloth sticks to the surface, or you note changes in the texture of the surface, it's a "NO".

IMO, the most practical way to get the answer is to take a small snip off your plastic material and soak it in a container with the diesel oil, and come back to it 1, 2, 3 days later, 1 wk later, depending on how long you intend to store the diesel fuel in its plastic housing.

I would not rely on "theoretical" answers received from unknown sources, especially if it's your job on the line. I'm sure your boss will appreciate the wait rather than the loss, if the answer you get from fora like this turns out to be wrong.

Tks.

Our product should be used for 10 years at least. So I can not do this test in short time..

Then ask the manufacturer of your plastic container. They ought to know.
