i have a chunk of metal and i think its silver or sterling silver.

could anyone tell me how i can find out what material it is. instead of just someone saying what it is?

Would a high-street jeweller's shop be able to help (for a small fee)?

You could use a handheld XRF scanner to test for metals. However, Sterling silver is just a hardened alloyed silver, so you will need to know the alloy components other than silver and ratios.
