A mine shaft enables reaching the minerals under the surface and facilitates the transport of people and material up and down.

In SA we have shafts of over 5000 m.

Hello babumechanical

Apart from the explanation by Hendrik above, ( A vertical or near vertical hole in the ground), a shaft as a mechanical item is generally used to transmit mechanical energy, often in the form of rotating metal, from one source of energy to do useful work further along the shaft.

Example: turbine/alternator - motor/machinery engine/propulsion of ship and that type of thing.

There are various types of shaft: Crankshaft, camshaft, motor shaft, alternator shaft, turbine shaft, propeller shaft, gearbox shaft, push-rod shaft, and many more specialized types of shaft.

Kind Regards....

As I read the OP's post further, I realized that he meant The shaft.

The shaft is a device used by employers re extract revenge on employees. It brings pleasure to employers, and misery and anger to employees.
