The Thickest Plate Glass Available

11/13/2008 2:56 AM

Can anyone tell me the name of a supplier of plate glass like might be used in a table top but thicker?

I'd like to buy one 24 inches square for an experiment but it has to be at least 0.75" thick preferably 1" thick.

Thickest I can find from glaziers around here is 0.5"

Thanks

L. J.

Being a telescope maker and astronomer, I've purchased from Schott before. Thanks for that suggestion.

Theirs is high optical quality, I was hoping to find a less expensive source, somewhere here in the USA.

Thanks

Hello Laughing Jaguar

Perhaps you could enter your Location and Country into your Member Profile - it's easy to do and updates through all your Posts and Topics.

While readers may guess at a supplier for you, you may very well be on the opposite side of the globe to the supplier they recommend.

Kind Regards....

Yes I read it too. PPG a leading manufacture of plate glass 3/4 is as thick as they go.

You need to spell out country of use so one can guide you nearest source. This is not a very thick glass and am sure you can find and if not you can melt and cast also. I can provide you formulation, method and list of supply to do it. At the end of day what you are looking to achieve out of the glass.

Most of the table top glass gives out sodium and you can not do any conductive electrical or chemical experiment on its surface. But there are glass which will allow you to do that.

After speaking to several dealers for Shott, the best price I could find for annealed plate was factory glass direct.

I will order from them soon after Thanksgiving,

Thanks OZZB!

Theoretically thickest "float glass" (often mistakenly called plate glass these days)you can get is 25mm. I say theoretically as you then have to find the supplier which stocks it. For table tops it is tempered glass (also called toughened or security glass) which would be the most applicable.

note that when the glass is tempered, you have to order it to size first. You can't cut tempered glass.

Sheet thickness are: 15mm, 18mm, 20mm and 25mm. These thicknesses are generally used for balustrades.

Can't think that this helps you find a supplier. Sorry.

1" and 2" or higher thickness plate may be ordered specially from the factory.

I know this is correct because I have parabolic mirrors made from plate glass that are over 2 inches thick.

Such thicknesses are not common however, in more commercial applications and they can get more expensive because of that.

For my application, 3/4" is adequate. The lead given to me by OZZB has proven excellent.

I am getting quotations as you read this.

Thank you

L.J.

I was in the US Navy and the glass on ship's bridge windows was thick bullet proof glass. You could look at military surplus and get thick glass. My web site is at www.anchorelite.com . What type of experiment are you doing?

"What type of experiment are you doing"

I am building an optical bench and need a reasonably flat mirror. 16" to 19" square (*or round) with a smooth polish.

It will have a hole in the center about 2" in diameter. I can trepan that myself.

Checked out your web site but saw no reference to glass.

Find a company that either converts or makes armored vehicles. They have a source for bulletproof glass, but it is probably laminated. Another source may be someone who makes large glass panels for aquariums.

If your on a low budget, try finding a Sony Trinitron TV. they are a flat screen glass which I'm told is 1" thick (a very heavy tube). You should find a bunch of them since they do not make parts for them. I got one if you want it.

Preedy Glass is in England and the costs to get the glass to the US makes it uncompetitive.

Thanks for the suggestion

One more suggestion in lot of others:

You may try to find the port glass from old market. I got few port glasses, scrap from the broken ships, which are 1" thick and very cheap as compared to those from glass amrket.

" I got few port glasses, scrap from the broken ships, which are 1" thick and very cheap as compared to those from glass market."

Port Hole Glass was once plentiful. Then a guy named John Dobson showed people how to grind, polish and figure that glass into really great telescope mirrors. Soon that supply of glass dried up.

Good suggestion but others have beat us to the punch.

Another reason is that I want glass in the 16 to 18 inch range. I've never seen Port Hope glass in that size.

Thanks
