Number and Type of Valves in Refineries

11/19/2008 9:57 AM

I am doing some research on the number (total and of each type) of valves found in a refinery and in refinery units (e.g. CDU, FCC, Coker, etc.). Can someone help me find this information?

Thanks.

I am doing some research on the number- Please do your research and let us know when after 3 years when you finish. It will help us answer the next guy asking the same question.

I have heard from some experienced valve vendors that 80 to 100 control valves are used for every 100,000 BBL capacity for the refinery. This has been a good estimate I use for outages and turnarounds.

My company makes isolation valves (gate, globe, butterfly, check) that we sell into refineries. I believe you have a good estimate for control valves. Do you have an estimate for isolation-type valves?

Thanks for your help.

Hello jlunde:

I am not sure a figure can be put on these valve quantities.

It would depend on the size of the installation.

What size ship it is designed for.

If the oil is piped in.

Is it designed to ship the oil back out.

Are the oil products going to be transported out by truck.

Etc Etc..............

You can maybe get a total of valves on one site. But it will not necessarily be the same as any other site.

Is this a bet you have with someone, asking if you can get the answer?

You would have to have the P&ID drawings of every piping system in the whole plant to count these up and it still might not show all of the valves. This could take months to figure out. I think the poster that said so many valve per barrel of oil is your best bet here.
