Communicate is an exchange or transfer of data, ideas or instructions.

a communication system would then be a tool to communicate with. (telephone, cel, internet, skype , VOIP. . . )

Communication is the action performed using the tool by 2 or more people.

(Except my wife - who does it all by herself )

What we do here is communicate our thoughts and ideas. These thoughts and ideas are our communications. The communication system is our computer and the internet. The conversation that you have over your phone are yours and the other persons communications. The communication system is the phone and all the hardware.

The two answers to your question are in order but let me add this;

Communication(s) is the art of sending and receiving messages/information.

For communication to be effected, there must be a source and a destination.

A communication system is an aggregate of the objects or materials which makes communication possible.

In Electronic communication, the aggregation of equipment and medium between the source (transmitter) and the destination (receiver) constitute the communication system.

Example, In Local FM radio communication, the transmitting station equipment (microphone/transmitter/antenna), the medium (air or cable) and your FM radio receiver, constitute the FM communication system. While the music, news bulletin, weather information from the station as received by the small FM receiver constitute the communication.

Also with the telephone system; your Telephone handset, the local loop,the central office exchange of the Telco and the local loop/handset of the called number constitute the Telephone communications system. While the converstion is the communication.

From the foregoing, you will realise that communications system is broad hence could be difficult sometimes to comprehend but when you localise the type of communication, like radio, Tv, telephone, data, voice, video etc, it becomes easier to define.
