transformer rating

Without knowing actual load what we are going to put on transformers,for example a resdential colony, i need to get supply on what basis i should select transformer rating?is there any thumb rule for 1sqft some "k" voltamps.

You would need to advise far more information:

A) Residential Colony of what:

  1. Ants
  2. Bats
  3. People
  4. Other - Advise please

B) Location:

  1. South Pole
  2. Sahara Desert
  3. Congo Jungle
  4. Other - Advise please.

C) Climate Conditions:

  1. Humidity level
  2. Temperature level
  3. Other - Advise please

D) Building type:

  1. Glasshouse
  2. Igloo
  3. Solid masonry - ancient castle - arrow slits only, no glazing
  4. Number and size of windows
  5. Barn
  6. Other - Advise please

As you might easily see, there are many variables.

Thus no quick formula or Watts per sq foot are applicable, because of the variables.

Hi Guest,

There is no thumb rule for selection of KVA capacity of a distribution transformer . You have to estimate the maximum demand,peak load, average load, the total connected load , factor of safety and provision for expansion to estimate the KVA capacity of the transformer to be installed.

Typical household in USA has between 5 and 15 VA per square foot, but that's not set in stone either, as it varies depending on location in the US. Location on the globe has much to do with "typical" installations. How much power is available from the electric utility?
