Hmmm, know what? I've never really bothered to look very deeply into their differences. I'll give you what I know.

Foundation Fieldbus uses two-wire cables which acts as both the power cable and the signal cable. A single two-wire cable can have up to 8 instruments on it. If you insert repeaters, you can have more than 8 instruments.

HART also uses two-wire cables for power and signal but has slower speed and has less data to transmit/receive than Foundation Fieldbus. The first HART version had the HART data riding on the 4-20mA current signal of the instrument. This meant that each instrument has its own cable unlike Foundation Fieldbus which can have up to 8 instruments on one cable. The newer versions of HART also enabled it to have several instruments on one cable though I don't know exactly how many are allowed.

Profibus, I have little knowledge about. I know that it uses four-wire cables, one pair for power and another pair for signals. Geographically, it seems to be more popular in Europe than Foundation Fieldbus which is more popular in the Americas.

regards,

Vulcan

Dear Vulcan:

The Profibus in his Process versión (Profibus PA) is two wire (Twisted pair) for data and power, it permits up to 31 instruments in a segment of the bus (Limited for the current capability of the DP/PA Coupler and the current of the instruments supplied for). It has a Intrinsically safe option (Inherent). It runs up to 35.25 KHz (45.45KHz).

Profibus PA permits to comunicates a lot of data, (process data, maintenance data, status and quality of the signal).

Profibus has some advantages over Fieldbus Foundation (Mainly the number of nodes around the world - Market Leader, several versions, Profibus for CPU to CPU communication - FMS, master slave communication - DP, Process - PA, Special prfile for Motion Control application - ProfiDrive and is the unique bus approved for Safety application - ProfiSafe) and Fieldbus Foundation has his benefits too (Mainly the posibility for remote closed loop control, PID Loop in the instrument).

Hart is a lower features, technology and capability bus and is not comparable to Fieldbus Foundation or Profibus.

Could you pls provide me detail about difference between HART and fieldbus when implemented in practical. Considering in a running plant. pls do send some presentations related to this.

I'm sorry, I may have confused my fieldbuses .

Around 1997 or thereabouts, our engineering team attended several presentations by distributors of different fieldbuses and process networks. The four-wire fieldbus I mentioned is probably not Profibus. Anyway, we narrowed our choices down to Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, and HART. Profibus would have been a preferred choice because our company is Swiss-based but Foundation Fieldbus won out due to better customer support (so they claimed).

After installation, we started getting problems. Instruments would stop working and no one could figure out why. Compounding the problem was that everytime we replaced an instrument, we needed to update the device descriptions (DD). Unfortunately, the instruments were delivered without the DD (in compact disks). Customer support said we could download them from the website but the ones in the websites were not updated. It typically took us four to eight hours to get the process back up and running.

I proposed to downgrade the system to 4-20mA but was blocked at every turn. After I retired, I learned that they did eventually go back to 4-20.

regards,

Vulcan

Profibus PA (For process industry) is two wire bus powered. (I've implemented some PA projects so I know about that.)

fieldbus foundation is only for process (Mainly for instruments), Profibus is for process and automation (instruments, drives, I/O, motor controllers to PLC, PLC to PLC etc.).

Both option has your markets, Profibus in Europe and FF in USA and American's influenced markets.

As per my knowlage Hart communication much more reliable than FF(Foundation Fieldbus)and Profibus is use to communicate field instrument and Processor.

PROFIBUS
PROFIBUS is a fieldbus protocol used in the Process Automation industry in a similar way to Foundation Fieldbus . It uses a multiple master and slave structure with predictable cyclic communications. PROFIBUS is common in Europe and exists in different versions: PROFIBUS DP Mainly used to communicate between PLC,systems or Bulk I/O devices. There is no power on the network -in Euronorm PROFIBUS FMS For PLC-PLC comms -in Euronorm. PROFIBUS PA For Process Automation For communication between field devices e.g. Pressure transmitters -in Euronorm Profibus-DP/V1:Decentralized Peripherals,Version 1.9 December 1996 (Draft)Quick, cyclic Data transmission . DPV1 adds the facility for Acyclic communications.

Fieldbusses

A fieldbus is a method to allow digital communications between field devices including control room equipment. There are many fieldbusses available each one providing advantages for particular applications. For process control including devices such as pressure transmitters then the most suitable protocols would be Profibus DP/PAand Foundation Fieldbus, as they both supply power on the network. LON and DeviceNet are examples of sensor busses that cater for simple devices such as status switches.

HART
Highway Addressable Remote Transmitter - open Master-Slave protocol for bus addressable field instruments.->Asynchronous Data transmission with ->Half duplex-Procedure according Bell 202 Standard with 1200 Bit/s. This is a method of transmitting data via Frequency Shift Keying on top of the 4-20mA process signal to allow remote configuration and diagnostic checking. Devices such as the ABB S900 and S800 can make these HART diagnostic messages available to Asset management systems (AMS)such as ABB Optimize IT.

What a great question for an internet search engine.

Once discovered, please update Wikipedia (usual disclaimer - other encyclopediae are available) with the findings.
