How Does a Solar Eclipse Affect Wildlife?

12/17/2008 11:45 PM

Is there any effect of Solar Eclipse on wild life. Any scientific study reference? I think there are many misconceptions based one what one feels. I want scientific references.

Astronomy and Geophysics, Vol 42, Issue 4 has an article about the 2001 total eclipse in Africa.

Cows lay down. Birds stop singing.

I imagine the effect is based on instinctual behaviour as relates to day and twilight. It never gets completely dark inside the penumbra.

I saw a total eclipse in SC many years ago, and as it got dark, we saw chickens going into the coop to roost as if for the night. When the eclipse passed, they came out and resumed pecking on the ground.
