Remove Embedded Pirate Software

12/21/2008 12:21 PM

I recently installed an IOBit program, Advanced System Care3, that has hijacked my system. It's corrupt and I can't remove it.

I can't get rid of the scummy thing, no matter what I do. It doesn't come up the installed programs list when I go to uninstall, it's not anywhere to be found, except in Windows Explorer, but when I try to delete it it tells me I need permission to perform that operation. Permission from whom, I'm not sure. I downloaded another uninstaller and tried that, but no help. It didn't list it, either.

When I go to the website for help I'm put into a circular path that goes nowhere so, I can't even get help from the !@#$%^&*()_ who got me into this situation.

Maybe I should have looked more closely at the agreement at the start, but, here I am.

I've given up on wanting to choke the life out of the people responsible for my plight, and am now asking for help.

Thanks

Last time I got hijacked I installed a more powerful virus checker with the latest virus updates. It picked up the program and killed it. Other than that, I think a hard drive format is in order. Just make sure you carefully screen any files you backup before putting them back on your 'clean' computer.

Hi lynlynch

I would suggest:

  1. Avast! antivirus (free)
  2. Spybot (free)
  3. Using Windows system restore (Help and Support under Start), this should at least remove it from the registry, although the file will be still there, Avast! or Spybot may find it.
  4. Google the problem to see if someone else has a solution
  5. Only reformat your disc as a last resort

Good luck, Tony

Hello lifeisgreat:

Just saying welcome!

Let me know if you have any problems or, conversely, how you managed to rectify the problem please?

It helps all who visit in the long run!

If you need to run in 'safe mode' It is actually named the "System Configuration Utility".

Go to start > Run click on Run > type msconfig, press OK.

I do not want to repeat myself, if you have problems you think is a virus, it is better to do any scans through the safe mode. I can't remember what to choose now, but you have three basic choices plus extra alternatives if you choose a particular ticked square. You want only as much of the OP (Operating System) to run as you need. And if you choose a setting and it is not the one which allows the anti virus to scan, go back and choose another setting. Start the most complete scan you can on your anti virus, Anti spyware, and Registry cleaner.

After each scan or after all the scans on each anti virus or anti spyware and reg' cleaner, or after you have done ALL your scans, you will be told progressively at the end of each scan if anything was found. The reg cleaner should find the nasties but not always.

I found it took me several scans with two or more reg cleaners, but you must disable one reg cleaner or un-install it before you use the next. Much the same for anti virus scanning software. It may not work and do as complete a scan as it can if you have two anti virus turned on. It pays to un-install each as with the reg cleaner. Make a note on paper about the site details and if you want to load that software again you do not have to scratch your head and try to think!

It will take some time. It took a week to clean my computer on the last serious infection. It helps to pull the connection to the internet from the computer while you are scanning. No more nasties can get in and maybe screw your scanning up.

When you finally come out and you know you will not have to go into safe mode again, do three or four restart/reboots, whatever you want to call it. Do not do anything between each boot. Do not be tempted to check your email or look at the web. Just restart at least three times and if all seems well, and you know where the nasty file was, go see if it is there. It should not be. If it is you will have to check for a specific un-installer for that file.

Another post mentions you can search and find the file which in probably in window system32 files. Or similar.

Good luck...................

Re: Remove Embedded Pirate Software

I am ALWAYS leery of any free software. Too many "free" programs come with hooks to "pay". It may be an annoying message that pops up or in the case you have where it can seriously compromise the machine and you have to hand over cash to the company to get the "fix" that takes their crap off of your machine (or pay for a real anti-virus program).

If it's free, it ain't worth it.

I really get irritated at the amount of crap that Yahoo, AOL, Google and their like will load onto your machine when you download their "free" software. They clog up your browser with toolbars I never use, load all kinds of applets all over the place. At least I can say I don't believe they are malicious, but it is irritating none the less. I understand that you can probably "custom" load the things you want, but the missus and the kids just click the "typical" installation button on the installation screen and get spammed with all that other bloatware.

While I'm on my soapbox, all you software developers out there: "Don't hijack my file associations without asking me first !! Just because I loaded your Adobe Photoshop program on my machine, don't assume I want to use YOUR software to view every graphic file I open on my machine !@!@!@! It takes so friggin' long to open up some of these applications and 9 times out of 10, I just want to look at the file, not edit it. It's a pain to go back and change the file associations. Adobe is not the only guilty party by any means, so many use this tactic to get more "face" time.

Finished with rant. TY.

If you want a really good, fast loading, user friendly, easy to navigate Picture viewer/modifier try IrfanView. It is freeware at: http://www.irfanview.com/

I have been using almost daily for many years. Version 3.95 works great for all types of pictures, but I prefer other programs for movies. I just download IrfanView 4.22 and will see if it has better options for the movies. It is also available in many languages …this software GREAT!

You can add HP to your list and I paid for it. I even did a custom install to limit it and I eventually installed the parts (add-ware) I did not want. Guess who I will not be buying from again.

Re: Remove Embedded Pirate Software

My whole computer was locking up and had a false desktop that had been overlaid on my regular desktop. it was a real pain in the but and the other programs I tried didn't even recognize that I had a problem.

I went to lunch and came back with this wonderful problem and no one knew how it could have gotten there.

After we finally got rid of it, we discovered that someone had been to one of thos sights that don't belong on a work computer and had installed some activex software that installed the malware. So consequently I now lock my computer before going to lunch so no one can use it.

Couldn't find the log that had the software in it but it is gone now and no longer a problem.

Hello double_j_b:

thank you for your reply post on the malware thing.

I have had my email open for several hours and when I looked there was just little dots and dashes where the 'envelopes should be alongside the headers, you know?

It also happens to any file that is based on my computer. Including the desktop icons and file icons in each and every file.

If you are sure it is the one you used and it worked I will try it.

Take care and have a wonderful holiday.....................

Take care and get back to me if you have any luck. I think this is the most likely search term for good result. Other terms bring all kinds of things about cars etc that you are not after.

I suggest you go into safe mode and you will find about four options. Choose the option which allows you to use your anti virus and Reg' cleaners etc. Do them on full search and see what they turn up Searching in safe made is more complete scan. Don't be impatient. I think your normal antivirus tool may reach iSoftware Care3.

Try it and disconnect from the interent while you do each search. Unless you need to updats an anti virus stay off line until you use every anti this and that.

You may have to clear your HDD and start again. And if you have just started it may be your best bet. But I would try the safe mode scans first.

Go on-line, download and update the uninstaller, then disconnect from the phone line. Run the uninstaller. If it doesn't work uninstall that and try the next gradually working through the software you choose to use.

Good luck and have a happy holiday!.................

Thanks to you and all who sent posts to help me with my problem.

The offensive software is off my back. FileASSASSIN removed it.

It was easy enough that someone with a feeble brain, such as myself, could do it.

Happy Holidays!

Hello lynlynch:

I am please you solved your problem!

I have one of my own which is making my icons break into tiny pieces, and leaves lines where the icons were. I may have a go with fileASSASSIN.

It also pops up a note saying my computer will shut down if I do not relicense. I am hoping that does not happen! 'coz I am going away for a couple of days. So I may get back to 'no computer'?

Take care and have the most wonderful Xmas, OK?

I'm not sure if this will help but I use AVG 8.0 (anti-virus) which has been working quite well for me. Another software that I constantly use is CCleaner (registry cleaner). I've set up CCleaner and AVG to run everytime I start up.

It's also possible that your computer's been set up so that you're a User (not administrator), check to see if your profile has been changed.

regards,

Vulcan
